Oil pressure issue

I really hate asking questions and I especially ask hating stupid questions or ones that have already been answered. However, I have searched and searched and what I have going on just doesn't make any sense.

I have a late 2000 F350 7.3l with only 120k miles.

My oil pressure seems to be dropping on acceleration and at high RPMs. Everything I read says that the oil pressure gauge isn't really, it's just a switch on and off. But, the normal reading on the gauge is about 3/4 up and, when this started, when I pressed the accelerator it would drop to about 1/4, hold there and go back up when I let off the acc. Now it seems to bounce around the low end but it isn't acting like just an on-off thing.

At idle it tends to show normal, but, it does seem to be indicating low more and more, even at idle.

I have read that since the injectors rely on oil pressure to run that if the actual low pressure side were consistently as low as indicated the vehicle shouldn't actually run at all. That seems to hint at a sending unit rather than an actual pressure issue.

So, the questions ...

Can anyone explain why my "gauge" has been acting like this if it is actually just a switch?

According to my Chiltons (which, when it has anything hasn't let me down yet) the sending unit is located on top just in front of the tranny. That would put it under the turbo but I can't seem to find it. Any hints on where the sensor is actually located? Am I reading this wrong?

I really think I need to test the oil pressure with an actual gauge. Any suggestions on the best place to connect to do that?

And, of course, any other guidance would be appreciated.

Keith

From what I can tell the gauge get's it's information from the ICP sensor on the 7.3L. I honestly have not seen a oil pressure sensor on the 7.3L other than the ICP sensor.

From my manual on the gauge:

Oil Pressure Gauge

The instrument cluster is hardwired to the oil pressure sender unit. The instrument cluster micro-processor monitors the oil pressure data and commands the oil pressure gauge indication with a corresponding movement of the pointer. The oil pressure indicator sender unit consists of a diaphragm and contact points. The contact points are closed with oil pressure causing the gauge to indicate NORMAL oil pressure. With no oil pressure, the contacts open and the gauge indicates low oil pressure.

The oil psi sender is on top of the hpop resevoir. Take off the cover in front of the fuel filter and woop there it is. Oil psi probably OK. There is a port above the oil filter you can tap for a gauge or T in at the oil psi sender

Skibarefoot is correct, when I got to thinking about it I was thinking the one on the top was the oil temp sensor, I went out and looked at mine and realized I forgot about the one on the back of the reservoir was the temp sender and the top one was pressure. Doh

It is called an oil pressure switch so maybe yours is on the fritz, and sending trons in bad ways.
