Optima Batteries and New Headlamps???

Just ordered my AIS, smoking deal. At same time I am going to replace my batteries (Phoenix and the heat you know). Whats the story on the Optimas and the bracket I need to make sure I get?

Also, with batteries out want to go with brighter headlamp bulb. No harness upgrades just the brighter bulb. Whats up with that, too?

Re: Optima Batteries and New Headlamps???

The bracket should be taped to the top of the battery. Make sure you get the 34/78's with 980 CCA's. Once you put the brighter bulbs in you'll be buying the harness. I did. Going to put the harness in today. This will get you alternator voltage, instead of 11+-. Then they'll be bright.

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the truck. You will need it eventually.

Look at the contacts on your headlight - the electrical conductors that actually carry the current, then look at the factory headlight wiring (16ga?) and then decide if you want to pull more current through this crappy setup.

I wouldnt. I did, on my 00, and it nearly fried the whole connector assy. Melted the potting compund used in the headlight connector and burnt the harness pigtain connector.

Dont do this.

Don't know where you came up with those specs. According to the Optima Batteries website The 34/78s are 800 CCA not 980.
Scott:
I personally would not put in a higher wattage bulb without heavier wire harness. As stated above, a heavier gauge harness will deliver the 14+ volts to the bulbs and the difference between 12 and 14 is nearly night and day!
