Output Shaft Bearing??? PLEASE HELP!!!

When I am on the highway and I release my foot off the gas pedal, there is a jolt. The same holds true when I am changing gears and accelerating after it is engaged as if the driveshaft is catching up again. So I get under the truck and hold the output shaft from the transfer case to check my rear u-joints, and I have no play on those joints, but when I twist the driveshaft without holding the output shaft, I have about 3/4" of play. The play appears to be from the rear end of the transfer case. Is there some type of bearing in the transfer case where the shaft comes out and meets the rear driveshaft? I have read other posts on here with horror stories of the driveshaft falling off and FUBARing a lot of stuff back there. I appreciate your help, and hope that I have narrowed it down. Please help me confirm it!!! Part names and numbers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link, but do you know what may be causing that play in the output shaft? Is it a bearing? Is it something else in there? What part should I look for if I open it up? Do you know if there is a post or a write-up on taking apart the transfer case? Thanks!

So the transfer case can't be repaired? Is that what you are telling me?

That's exactly what I thought, but I just need to know what exactly to look for when I open up the transfer case... What is causing this play in my driveline? Does anyone know of a thread here with a write-up on a transfer case breakdown?

Take the driveshaft off and check the flange nut before you take it all apart. If the nut is loose you might get away with just replacing the flange because it is softer than the output shaft.

I've got the same issue, but I can't tell if it's the transmission or transfer case. How did you determine it's the t-case and not a transmission problem?

Do you know if there is a write-up or exploded view of the transfer case so that I know exactly what the "flange nut" is? Thanks for your help!

The flange is the part that the driveshaft bolts to.If you unbolt the shaft you will see a big nut the holds the flange onto the output shaft.I have seen these nuts loosen and the flange start to wear on the spline of the shalf and become loose. If this happens the shaft is harder than the flange so you can usually get away with just replacing the flange and a new nut.

But I thought that the driveshaft was bolted on the rear end, and the other end where the splines are just slid into where that output shaft is... Am I not understanding?

You must not have slid under the truck and looked. Both outputs (front and rear) of the t-case are flanged, held to the output shafts with a nut. The driveshaft flanges bolt to them with 4 bolts each.

To answer your original question, there is a needle bearing just forward of the output flange. It's number 47 on the attached exploded view of your t-case.
Output Shaft Bearing??? PLEASE HELP!!!-t-case-blowup.jpg

I believe that the tail housing (#46) has to come off to replace that bearing.

abelsauceda,

The play you are talking about, is it side-to-side/up-down, or rotational?
