99 f350 7.3 i went to the store yesterday if fired right up smoked a little and quit smoking; this is normal. TODAY i jump in it tried to start and spins great but no start and a HUGE amount of grey smoke, at least 3 times normal amount, so anyway after a normal crank and a long 30-45 sec it barely started still smoking bad. left to the store and by the end of drive 200' all was normal started normally since. the only thing differant was i had the radio on with a batt charger on trickle so not to drain batt. oh, and i am going to pull covers back off and recheck my injecters. ANY IDEAS???
Have you ran any objectors cleaner through it ? I would check the objectors... Then check the glow plugs... But I'm thinking to fill the fill the fuel filter with the diesel clean diesel treatment, and let that run through the pump... that may just clear up your hard starting problems... I doubt having the radio on with the starter had anything to do with the recent issue at all.. unless your motor wasn't turning enough rpms, there is no reason it shouldn't have fired up properly.. normally I would practice using a objectors cleaner or additive with each tank, because the fuel these days is getting worse and worse for the Ford pumps.. hope this helps.
Check your glowplugs and relay first. Fuel treatment in the filter would be all right for the injectors but it won't run through your pump as the pump is ahead of the filter. And it's highly unlikely injector cleaner will cure a hard start condition.
Lots of smoke with a hard start is almost always a glowplug system problem.
Yes sir excuse me not double checking my attempt to lend a helping hand... Apparently you boys in Texas don't fit the typical stereotype.... Here's to technology of cell phone autotype, and the education system of Texas... Although California isn't must to speak for in that matter these days either... God bless america!
I would look at the GPR as well. When they start getting some time on them, they develop dead spots which will give you intermittent hard starts and lots of white smoke.

that is possible when i first got truck last year it was doing the same thing, i thought that i would replace GPR ,as it turned out i replaced the wrong one i replaced the intake heater relay (didn't know which one,NOW i do), i may have ruined it. i was thinking of a bypass. i had seen several ways on this site but which one is the easiest and cheapest?? have al the wire and switchs. i changed everthing back to the right way and put the 'new' relay in the right place. no differance.
