i have had this problem with my driver side rear tire, it has a little wobble in it, so i took the tire off jacked the truck up and put it in drive and the whole hub was wobbling so now i finally took the axle out and made a bracket like a straight edge on the outside of the hub and spun it to see if it would still do it with the axle out and it was straighter than an arrow, so that tells me the axle is making the whole assembly wobble, now my question is, is it possible to bend an axle in the floating type hub that the 250 has? because i didnt hit any curbs real hard or anything
You can bend and or twist an axle but it is rare
Right way to check is put it between two center points and spin it. A machine shop can do this and check with dial indicator.
You can do this your self. The axle has center points on each end that you can mount to some kind of jig or 2 vice's with a center punch on each vice to hold axle as you spin it. Might have bad bearing
What maintains the straightness of the wheel hub is the housing and bearings. But for it to wobble, the bearings would have to be totally shot with way too much play. If the axle housing were bent (typically they get sagged), the tire would tip in at the top, but would still spin without wobbling on the housing.
I suppose the axle shaft could be bent, but still the bearings would have to be extremely loose for the hub to wobble. I'd think if the bearings were properly preloaded, the axle would flex as the wheel turned on the housing.
You could swap the axle shafts side to side and see if the wobble follows that axle shaft over to the passenger side.
The hub is piloted by two bearings, so it’s these two parts that will keep a hub assembly true unless they are worn or have two much clearance.
Or the flange to mount the wheel is bent.
The axle driving shaft is piloted at the differential and the hub’s outer mounting surface. It can be bent and only cause a harmonic vibration and some stress at the flange bolts, but it’s not going to cause the hub to wobble.
It’s not clear from your discussion, but when you pulled the drive axle shaft did you also remove the wheel assembly?
If so, then possibly the wheel is bent, or you looking at the tire sidewall which can be distorted when made (not unusual), or the bearings need the extra weight of the wheel and tire to show the fault.
its not the wheel cause i took it off and jacked it up and put it in drive and watched it and it still wobbled, i did take the hub off and the inner bearing was a little pitted but not bad so i replaced it and put a new seal on and put it back together and it still had a little wobble, the thing that is troubling me is when i unbolt the axle and pull it out and spin the hun it doesnt wobble, so it seems like its the axle that is making it do it, i dont know i dont know everything about these rear ends yet but i do work at a machine shop so monday i am going to take the axle and put it on the lathe and see if it is straight...
i'm fighting the same mess that you talked about in this thread.. what was the out come? was your axle bent? if you have any advise, please throw it out there.. this is driving me nuts and eating rear tires. they go out of round..
