Power Loss

1999 [early] 7.3

Driving along and lose power...can barely move...Check Engine light comes on...stop, shut engine off, restart..everything is fine.

First time, I said "Oh well", but now it's happened one or two additional times.

Any ideas?

Thanks, in advance.

Ron

Mine did something similar...

Fuel pump...

It would drive fine for a couple miles... get on the highway, and it would get slower and slower.. start to buck and then stall. A couple minutes on the side of the road, it would fire up and drive just fine (after the pump cooled down)... rinse, repeat.

Ron, your problem sounds like Under Valve Cover harnesses for the injectors, especially if the check engine light came on. They can come unlatched and the electrical connection to the injectors opens. Expansion/contraction of the plastic can make the problem come and go.

The best bet is to get a scan done, which will tell you more. If it's just a UVC coming loose, it will give you a P127X code with the X being the affected cylinder. You can also try pulling off the connector on the outside of the Valve Cover while it's running badly. If there's no change in the engine, then pull that VC. If the engine dies, then it's probably the side that you DIDN'T pull the connector loose.

ChrisJohnson00TA, Your CEL probably didn't come on when you had your problem. The fuel pump system isn't monitored by the PCM except for power to the pump.

Thanks for the input...it's what makes this forum so valuable to me.

IPR seemed fine...didn't want to get too involved.

It did not act up again.

Went to shop and they found what they consider to be a fairly problem...the 42 pin connector has a tendancy to rub on a bracket on the left side valve cover and often wears thru' a wire. Found that on a wire for the No, 4 [I believe] cylinder and it was repaired.

Don't know it that was the problem or not...just have towait and see.

Thanks again for your responses.
