Looking to put a locker in my open 3.73 rear. Being a lowered dually, I only need it for the slick boat ramps, and the ocassional sidestep in the rain for fun. No rockcrawling, or dragstrip launches on my tractor trailer wheels. The powertrax is at least a couple hundred cheaper than the detroits or eatons. Is this a good piece? Does anyone have any experience with it? Thanks for any help.

Well, I have a powertrax lock rite in the axles of my 78 bronco and I have yet to break one, I do however constantly snap front axleshafts. I would reccomend a Detroit in your case, that diesel puts out a lot more torque and if you're going to lock it you might as well use the best, there's a reason why the powertrax is much cheaper.
I've spent alot of cash on pinion and carrier bearings, all new u-joints, and had driveshafts balanced. Then having all installed. A couple hundred dollars is a big difference if it will hold up. What do you use the Bronco for? If the powertrax will take any abuse, it should hold up to the little bit of use I would put it through. Thanks for the reply.

The bronco I have is for off roading, up here in Michigan everyone likes to mudbog so that's what it sees the bulk of....well, up until a couple of years ago anyway, i haven't had it out in a long time, I pulled the old boat anchor 351M out and replaced it with a bored out 460 lincoln but have yet to do anything with it. i don't know if those lockrites will hold up to that big block torque, there's a big difference in power, the M motor would just bog down whenever I got in the thicker mud, from what i've seen from other 460 equipped rigs out there the 460 will just keep churning, most likely i'll lose axleshafts long before i break the lockers though but that's my other issue, I have half ton running gear, i need to get bigger axles.
I put the Lockright in my jeep and it works great, but it is noisy. You hear the ratcheting any time you turn a corner. It is so loud people have asked me if something is wrong with my jeep. I have the "new" Detroit soft lockers in my bronco and they are quieter. For a daily driver I would recommend the Detroit Truetrac. The Truetrac uses gears so it is quiet and has no clutches to wear out. The Detroit Locker and Truetrac replace the entire differential where the Lockright only replaces the spider gears in the stock diff. That's why the Lockright costs so much less. Check to see if you have a factory limited slip, sometimes the Lockright is available for an open carrier, but not a limited slip diff.

I run one in a 12 second bracket racer behind a built 496. It is a Chevy 12 bolt rear. It has been in the rear end since about '93 or '94. I got it from PowerTrax for testing when they were just getting going and needed some one to put it thru some heavy abuse.
The unit itself has been great. I did have to play with the springs a little to get it to hook up like I needed and I think I did lose a spring once, but most likely my fault. I did break a couple of standard axles but was pushing a bunch of power thru 1/2 ton gear.
They are noisy cornering. Almost will make you think you have loose lug nuts. They also will lock up solid in a turn if under heavy throttle (spring adjustment will fix).
For what you are looking to do .

Thanks, that is what I needed to know. I guess I will try to decide if the extra cash is worth quiet operation. I have straight pipe exhaust, and a bb turbo, I wonder if I would even notice the noise from the locker?

I tow heavy and often with my X. It's two wheel drive and I go through grass, on gravel all the time. I replaced the stock limited slip with the Eaton Tru Trac. It works great. I got an install kit too with the bearings and shims. I'm glad I did. The outer diff bearing was pitted and we needed thinner shims for the install.
The tru trac has all gears and nothing to wear out. Very strong unit.

Make sure you have an OPEN rear diff, as that is the only way to install the lockrites. If you have a limited slip, then you will need to install an open carrier to accept the lockrite....in which case the detroit will end up cheaper and more reliable.
