Rear end is toast at 115,000 miles

2001 F-350 SWD. 115,000 miles never chipped. Infrequent towing with modest loads. Started getting metal on metal sound. Could have sworn it was the left front brake. Brought to dealer only to find out that the right rear axles siezed in the "cage" the axle sits in in the differential. The cage in turn spun inside the differential and took out a bunch of metal. This also allowed play in the axle which damaged the brake caliper bracket.

Service writer calls to say 1) he's never seen anything like this before and 2) he'd have to build up a replacement rear end piece by piece - Ford does not offer a complete assembly. He thought the parts alone would be $4000. I found a used rear end yesterday with 45,000 miles for $1295 and am going that route.

I've asked the service writer to get Ford involved under the premise that a catostrophic failure at 115,000 is unusual. He said he would try but went on to say that Ford basically blows him off after 75,000 miles (unless it still within warranty)

Any suggestions on how I can pursue this with Ford? Oh yea, my water pump is also history. I have the post on how to replace it myself but don't have the time so the dealer gets me on this also.

Re: Rear end is toast at 115,000 miles

Look on your bill and see what part number fluids they used. Then call the parts dept and ask if that is the correct fluid for your truck.

That's the correct fluid for the rear diff.
But not the front, it uses 80-90 if I remember correctly.

Something doesn't sound right here. The same dealer service the rear just a month ago and now is claiming it's TOAST a month later and telling you it's a $4K+ repair A rear end doesn't disingrate in a month, unless they grossly underfilled it and for under $4K you can get a complete Dana 80 SRW custom axle with disk brakes and locker. I think it might be time to find another service / dealership.

Re: Rear end is toast at 115,000 miles

I'll have a chat with the dealer (again) about the relationship between their service and the failure but as I posted originally I've already purchased a used rear end. I need my truck and don't have the luxury of shopping for a Dana or anything else.

What would the additive have to do with this? The only purpose of the LS additive is to minimize clutch chatter and has no effect on gear protection.

Lack of L/S additive can't cause a diff to fail. It's just to keep the clutches from chattering.
