Sounds like your hpop leaking. Check your intake valley for oil. That's probably where it's coming from.

Yea, I would start at the top before going to the rear seal. Get a flashlight and stand on top of the bumper, look for a puddle of oil down in the engine valley, bewteen the two valve covers. If you do see some it is probably just an o ring on one of the hpop lines.

I think it is hard to misdiagnose a rear main seal leak with the transmission removed. I believe bad crank can eat seals as you describe.

It is rare to see a leaking rear crank seal on the motors... however, it does happen.

The production seal rides directly on the crankshaft. If you are using the seal that Ford supplies (this seal is from Navistar), it will come with a wear sleeve. Ford cautions us against separating the seal from the wear sleeve (probably engineers playing CYA) and I prefer to follow that advice. Using the special tool, the seal and wear ring can be installed as an assembly.

There are two dowel pins to locate the seal carrier - make sure these are both in place. Grey RTV is the good stuff for sealing the seal carrier to the back of the block.

FWIW, I have seen more oil pans leak at the bottom of the rear main bearing cap than I have seen crank seals leaking. Even with your low miles, I would also consider the possibility of excessive crankcase pressure being a remote possibility for repeat seal failure. While I haven't seen any crankshaft failures that could give this kind of grief, it may be worth your while to check runout of the rear end of the crank with a dial indicator...

Repeat failures are a sign that we are overlooking something.. times like this, I get even more anal than I already am.
