The last I checked on this, rotella was the preferred oil. But that was about 5 years ago. I noticed in another thread that folks were recommending delo over rotella. Are most now switching to Delo and for what reason? Thanks
Its all personal preference. I have used rotella for the life of my truck and switched to Mobil 1 truck and suv when it came out. Couldnt find it any more and switched to Rotella synthetic. Its really just whatever oil you want you use.
I use Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic in both my CRD and PSD...It works well, no complaints here...I think most modern oils rated for your application will perform just fine.

I'm gonna say it as bluntly as I can.... Dino Chevron Delo400 is, and has been, a better oil than Dino Shell Rotella for quite a while. Shell has always had better marketing of Rotella.
Green, Gold or Red? OOOps wrong topic, same senario! LOL!
Many have claimed the Delo will give better oil reports over Rotella. My F350 DRW has only had Rotella used in it, I trust Hammer and most everything, LOL, so I am buying 4 gals of the blue stuff and will be giving it a shot next oil change which will be this week. I will run 5K as always and will send off for a report from Blackstone. We will see if there is any difference.
I had to order the Delo 400 in my small town everyone uses Rotella, I agreee with Hammer Shell has done a good job at advertising.
buster26,
I'm in western WA. The only place I've seen the DELO 400 synthetic openly sold is in the COSTCO Business Center store in Fife, WA. You might check one of those, if available, or your nearest Chevron jobber.
Larry M was getting some high Iron numbers on his UOA, particularly the oil changes with signifcant towing using Rotella. Switching to Delo 400 dropped his iron numbers.I think there is more discussion on this in the Little Secrets if your inclined to look there. I think there have been others that have had the same experience, lower iron numbers after switching from Rotella to Delo, particularly when towing.
I currently run Rotella and my first UOA at 61k came back fine and Iron was 10. That's for a stock van running mostly unloaded as a daily driver. Since I just did a 540mile run pulling a 38'TT with double slides, I'll send in another sample to Blackstone this oil change to see if there is an increase in wear metals on a OCI with 10% Towing at over max GCWR. I'm a couple thousand miles away from that oil change though.
My iron using Amsoil synthetic Series 3000 5-30, and their 15-40, was fine for around 100k. Then my iron all of a sudden went crazy. That's when I found out that I was not alone and that synthetics can have an adverse affect on the iron level. That's when I switched to Delo 400 15-40. Once I did, my iron went way down. I am headed to cold country again, so will look at the Delo 5-40 for winter use or something similar.

Pappy, don't be afraid to check out Schaeffer's 9000. It produces nice and low Iron levels as well. It is my preffered PSD oil but I usually recommend Delo or synthetic Rotella because they are easily found at Walmart.
Off topic: BTW, I was just up in your state Friday. Unfortunately I was over at the other side in Pocatello. I was gonna send you a PM but when I saw you were 300 or so miles away, I didn't bother.

Darn Hammer, if you had waited a week or two, I am being transferred to Ogden, Utah, so will be closer to the home station (4 hrs. to the cabin), and would only be an hour or so from Pocatello. If you get close again, let me know and we'll have a mug-up.
The Delo is so cheap at Costco, it's hard not to use it. I have been using cheap filters from Checker or Vato-Zone(buy one at $9 and get another free), but changing at 6k and seems to be working out ok. If I can't get a decent winter oil, I'll pm you for some additional info on the Shaeffer.
