Serpentine belt squeaking when cold, normal?

When I start my truck in the morning, I hear squealing noises that I think are from the serpentine belt but these noises go away once the engine has warned up a bit. The colder outside, the longer it takes for the noises to go away. The belt itself looks like new. Anything I can do? is this normal? thanks.

Good question - mine does that too even though I'm a little south of you (south florida). Low was 72 degrees last night but it still squeeked when I started it then went away in a couple of miles.

Re: Serpentine belt squeaking when cold, normal?

I tried belt dressing before, it worked a bit then it got worst so I would not use it again. The next vehicle that did the same thing, I just spray water on the belt with garden hose while the engine is running and rev it up a bit. The noise will come back after a day or so but doing this a few times finally stop the squeeking for months at a time.

Your tensioner may be weak. When you first start up, the glow plugs are on, and the alternator is putting out lots of amps to compensate. This equates to load on the alt pulley and serp belt.

It may also mean that one of the other belt-driven items (PS pump or water pump) are starting to stiffen up in the cold.

In REAL cold weather, bearings will squeal because the lubrication is too stiff. Keeps up till the bearing warms up enough so it turns correctly.

Re: Serpentine belt squeaking when cold, normal?

There is a service bulletin and repair proceedure to correct this on the 02 trucks. It involves a new better designed tensioner, a new pulley, new belt and a few other items. Problem has not returned once the service was done. It did take some pleading and 'discussions' to get the dealer to convince the district rep that I 'needed' the repair. Don't get me started on ford warranty service...

Re: Serpentine belt squeaking when cold, normal?

I just replaced mine,,, see this post and the picture it links to find how mine looked when it was bad. The squeek when first started was one of the symptoms...just didnt do it all the time. It ate my belt pretty quick on the edges....

Thanks for the replies, I will remove and inspect the belt tensioner over the weekend.

Re: Serpentine belt squeaking when cold, normal?

I had the same problem. I replaced the tensioner and the idler and the sound remained. They probably needed replacing anyway at 150,000 but it didn't stop the start-up squeek. Warmer weather has cured it though...
