Shift anomaly

The following problem is on my bro-in-law's '01 F250 4x4 ~200k...after starting he put it in D to drive to work. On acceleration the engine revved but forward motion was very limited and the OD light flashed on and off. Reverse, 1st and 2nd acted normal. The fluid level was good and the shifter seems normal (not sloppy). Tranny was rebuilt ~50k ago with no problems since). He shut the truck down and restarted and all was well again. Can anyone shine some light on this? I'm thinking a shift sensor in the steering column but I'm unfamiliar with the PSD setup.
Any suggestions much appreciated,

I don't know of any shift sensor in the steering column.

Have the codes read by someone that has a Ford specific scan tool. The generic tools that auto parts stores use can't read Ford trans codes. The code that set when the OD light was flashing will stay in the computer's memory for about a month after the last time it flashed.

I had the same problem, and found that there are two plugs on the trans mine had come loose because the mech that swapped out my trans broke the connector locks. So try to reseat the plugs and also check for any fluid in the harness plugs. Hope this helps

We'll check the plugs and have those pesky codes ran. I'll post results.

Thanks a bunch for the quick replies,

Cheers
