So my new trucked is broke

Bought a 2001 F250 auto, with 132k last week, and yesterday after about 300 total miles of easy driving the transmission/TC failed! I have not owned this truck a week yet ***! The fluid still looks full and did not smell bad I will be pulling the pan next and go from there. This was one clean truck with no abuse did I just get unlucky, or is this the curse of the 2001 tranny?

Send a message via AIM to BIGBLACKEXCURSION
mine went right at the 92k mile mark just before it was out of warranty then went again around 150k

i also tow a 10k pound trailer with my truck too. So im sure that had a lot to do with it.

get a ATS trans and converter. i hear they are great.

Well that is a drag to say the least. Some of the 2001's had the mechanical diode that would fail. Depends on the build date.

I really like the truck, but bought it to do work. We are not off to a good start. I have never worked on hd equip, how hard is a tranny pull and swap? Ford reman, jw, bts anything else?

I had my tranny go south about 45k miles. Had a reputable local rebuilder do the job and put a dual disc converter in it and a Transgo shift kit. I pull a 13k 5th wheel.

You can pull the tranny if you ahve a good tranny jack and a lift would be nice, but you can do it from jack stands; just have to have the truck high enough to roll out the tranny once it's disconnceted.

I've got a lift and the all gear. Just need to study up on removal, and find a builder fast.

Ouch! Worst bolt to get is the top one on passenger side. You can get to it by reaching over the top from the drivers side but it's still tough. I was lucky and all of the bolts came out easy once I broke them free. Lots of wobble extensions helped for the ones on the passenger side.

Not too bad a job if you take your time and don't let yourself get rushed.

Good luck.

Forgot to mention.....there are a couple of places on line where you can sign up for use of the shop manual. Three days, one month whatever. If nothing else they will give you torque values for puttting things back together.

Here is a manual for you, should have all the torque specs you need.

If you can swing it get a BTS or JW. You will probably be better off in the long run. I put in a HD4R100 from Ford/Motorcraft, I have been happy with it.

I used wobble extensions. You can get a set of them at Harbor Freight, enough variety that you can put them together and end up with a pretty long overall reach with a nice bend in it. Not the world's best tools but they work for something like this and won't cost you an arm and a leg.

UPDATE:

Well due to my current work schedule (6 days) I paid to have it done. My neighbor races mustangs and suggested his tranny builder who also does alot of Ford truck work. So one week and $2700 cash later I have my truck back. I had him do a full HD kit with the multi disk Torque Converter and cooler upgrade. Drove it up to Winter Park this morning shifts very smooth. 2 years 24k warranty so we will see.........

Sounds like a good deal if it holds up and does the job.
