Start-up Question

I have a '00 F250 with 7.3 that has 238,000 somewhat hard oilfeild miles on it.

I have checked the gp circuit and it works ok and the batteries are good. It does start when cold although it is hard starting like this morning it was 38 degrees here I did get it to start but when it started it smoked alot till it warmed up. failrly heavy smoke not just a little bit.

I know if the gp's were not working right it would smoke when it starts but my concern is the amount of smoke and the lenght of time it smokes. It will smoke like this even when it's 80 degrees out although it wont smoke as long when it's warm out.

It runs good once it's started just worried about the amount of smoke when cold. I drive trucks for a living so I am familiar with deisel engines and cold weather operation of them however this is the first pick-up with a deisel engine I have had... my first Powerstroke.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

What kind of air filter have you been running? You might want to pull the rubber inlet hose from the CCV fitting to the turbo and see how the blades on the turbo look. Any nicks/dings? I guess I am suggesting that those hard mining miles may have dusted the engine. The resulting loss of compression makes it hard to start.

What color is the smoke? White is unburnt fuel, which leads to a glow plug problem. Blue smoke, to me, indicates engine problems, such as rings etc. FWIW
