I own a 1999 7.3L Powerstroke. Monday morning my fuel light came on and not three seconds later it died in the middle of the road. We assumed it ran out of fuel. We were able to have someone bring us some fuel, only to have issues with it cranking. I took the fuel filter out, and it was pretty bad off. Turned the key, let the reservoir fill up with diesel, put the filter back in, and it cranked right up. Drove maybe a mile or two, same thing. I was able to get another fuel filter across the street at a dealer ship. Turn the key, fill up reservoir(I admit I am not mechanically inclined, and I'm not sure what you call the place the fuel filter goes)turn key, crank, drive 2-3 miles. So we were stranded, I finally got a hold of a friend with a big trailer to tow me home. Pulled fuel filter off, turned key, filled up reservoir, replaced fuel filter, crank, drove on trailer (we shut it off this time). Got home, unloaded it, pulled fuel filter off, turned key, filled reservoir, replaced fuel filer, crank, parked it, and it has been sitting in the same spot for two days. If anyone could give a lead I would greatly appreciate it.
i had somethin odd happin to me like this awhile back. i was low on fuel messin around with the chip then all the sudden the truck started missing and all power went, couldn't get it cranked. pulled it home took fuel filter out and tried starting it without fuel filter and bingo it worked. so i thought new filter will do it. got a new filter and put it in same problem truck would run then die. so then i started checking stuff. well i ended up replacing the fuel pump on the frame rail and finally got it to start. you could try and see if it will run without the fuel filter could mean your pump is on the way out if it will run without a filter. i did not run mine long without a filter just about 20 secs. so not sure if that would help you. you can try this...fill up the fuel bowl with fuel out of a can or somethin, then put the top on the fuel bowl, turn the key on let the fuel pump cycle turn the key off and then cycle the fuel pump again and try to start it. keep the rmps up. i would just mess with it sitting still so you don't have to tow it home.

Could cause to to have air in it too. I'm not really the saavy when it comes to mechanics. When you first turn the key on without the fuel filter in it is real bubble like there is air in the line.

I changed that last year. My truck had done sort of the same thing, but it ended up being the fuel pump, so we changed that while we were at it, there was a recall on the CPS for my year truck last year
