2002/03 F-Series and Excursion Belt Squeal; 99-01 with Replaced Belts:
Some 7.3 engines may exhibit a loud squeal noise from the engine area when the engine is under load and the fan clutch is locked up, typically in hot and dusty conditions. Another complaint may be the fan clutch oscillating or not locking up. This may be due to dust accumulating on the back side of the belt and causing it to slip on the water pump pulley. This usually affects only 2002 model/year vehicles, but may occur in trucks built from 99-01 if the belt was replaced after July 01. On single rear wheel trucks, replace the serpentine belt with P/N 1C2Z-8620-NA on single-alternator engines, and 1C2Z-8620-PA on dual-alternators. Broadcast Message 3848.
A service kit has been released for 2002 trucks only. It includes a belt, tensioner and water pump pulley. Use 2C3Z-8620-AA for single alternator and 2C3Z-8620-BA for dual alternators. Broadcast Message 0718.
jd730d - That is exactly my problem, do I get the parts from the stealer or can I get them from NAPA? Also, if I am going to have to change the belt, it would probably be a good time to flush my tranny and go from the green to the gold. Changing the top radiator hose at the same time, to the hose that is made for the dual alternator truck, that way one will not have to remove the hose next time you want to replace the belt.

There's not a thing wrong with your truck. At 2500rpm the fan will automaticly come on. To prove this is what your hearing, drop your rpm's too 2250rpm or so and you will here the fan kick off. Increase rpm to 2500rpm and the fan will kick back on.
I don't normally use turbo rpm for pulling my loads (16kGCW), about 1600rpm to 1750rpm (best fuel mileage), but last week I was pulling heavy (31kGCW) so I had to use some turbo power, 2250rpm to 2500rpm, I too thought the fan was noisy. To prove that this indeed was fan noise, on a flat road I kick'd it up to 2500rpm and the fan came on. So the fan will come on at 2500rpm without the need for extra cooling, like it does for pulling grades.

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run Define Union: A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.
We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!

I would recommend sticking with the Red Mercon on in the Tranny, the radiator/cooling system might not have such a fit over the differecne in fluids.
Thanks for pointing that out....
I meant flushing my radiator...

The problem that is described is the problem that I have, ie, under load, in hot conditions, at around 2500 rpms, my fan comes on, but it cycles rapidly, on 2 sec, then off 2 sec, on 2 sec, then off. When this happens, there is a screeching chirping sound associated with it. If I hit overdrive and get the rpms down, this stops. I just purchased the belt kit mentioned in that TSB I sent, it is supposed to address this issue. My truck is a F250 CCab 2WD, purchased 10/2002 as a 2003 model.

i've had this exact same thing happen and it scared the <insert favorite noun> out of me. sounded really bad when it started screaming at me. kicking into OD made it go away. what's this belt kit?
Normal, Got 2 F550's that do it all the time. Fan cluch. My truck are geared low. they run high rpm's and will do this all the time. Also the heater will blow warmer air if you do not run A/C. Nate

Once the sound starts, how long does it stay on? Should stay on for a about a minute. If the sound is coming and going every second or so, then this is a known problem.
Had my 2002 fixed about two years ago for the rapid cycling. Now it comes on and stays on for around a minute.

I pulled my trailer again today. It sounds like the fan clutch, but it does come on and go off every few seconds like you descibed. It does this for about a minute or so. What is this "rapid cycling",...of the fan clutch? What did they do to fix your truck and about what did it cost?
I don't think they work on many diesels here at my dealership. I need to tell them exactly what to fix. Now isn't that scarey!?
jd730d- did you buy the kit from the stealer or did you find it somewhere else? What did you pay for it?
I have heard this kit addresses the problem as far as the belt squeal, but for the "rapid cylcing", I think that part is normal for the fan clutch

Barrelsnpcs,
You have the same problem I had before it was fixed by the dealer. Normal fan operation is that once it gets hot, it comes on, and stays on for 30 seconds to a minutes. If your fan is cycling every second or so, then you need to have it fixed.
The kit comes with a new belt, a new water pump pulley, and a new tensioner. (I think I read the cost was about $86).
It has been over two years since I had it fixed, and it's still working great.
Good luck getting it fixed.

I assure you that the rapid cycling is not normal. The fan should come on, and stay engaged until the engine cools enough to shut off the fan. If it cycles rapidly, it is because the belt is slipping.
Mine used to cycle rapidly, but now stays engaged after the dealer applied the kit.

So you are saying that, with this kit that you mentioned above, it should take care of the squealing (belt slip)and the rapid cycling of the fan clutch? COOL

Thanks to jd730d, I found the part here for less than mitley_350 paid for it. They opened the box and it does contain all parts, belt, tensioner and pulley. I'll keep you all posted as soon as I get this in and installed. I'll have a good idea by next week if it solves the problem...
