Switching to Synthetic

I want to Switch to Synthetic, From Dino. I'm running Rotella 15/40 And want to switch to Rotella Synthetic, do I have to worry about the remaining Dino left in the system after draining the pan, I'm guessing it is not good to mix them? If it was you would think we would have heard of someone running something like a 50/50 blend of dino/syn by now? Thank you SPIKE481

Re: Switching to Synthetic

Your engine holds about 16 quarts of oil, but only 15 will drain when you change the oil. The other quart is in the high pressure oil pump (HPOP) reservoir, and it won't drain.

But mixing 15 quarts of synthetic with that one left-over quart of old oil is the normal way to change the oil to synthetic. Only real sticklers for detail will bother to suck the oil out of the HOPO reservoir before they pour in the fresh oil.

Re: Switching to Synthetic

There isn't a problem switching back and forth from synthetic to dino is there? I like the Rotella synthetic in the winter, but regular dino works great for me and the budget in the summer. Any thoughts? I thought I have heard of people doing this without problems, but just want to make sure!

Thanks!

I don't think so. I've done it more than once. Rotella T to Amsoil 15w40 synthetic and back to Rotella T. And Rotella T to Delvac 1 and back to Rotella T.

My only surprize was when Blackstone told me my oil change interval of 5,500 miles didn't change just because I paid more for synthetic oil.

Re: Switching to Synthetic

I can't find the lower weight oils in my area, so I guess I'll give this Syn, stuff a try for the winter Spike481

Re: Switching to Synthetic

Well I made the switch, WOW what a differences, The truck runs a lot quieter and seems to start a lot easer with temps getting close to zero, Do you think I will see the same performance running just a lower weight Dino ?? Spike481
