Temperature and heater issues

I have a 2001 F-250 4wd 7.3 powerstroke. Recently I noticed my heater was not working (blowing cold air, no heat). Additionally my temperature gauge shows the temperature running higher than normal. I noticed that if I run 70 mph or faster the temperature will rise to near overtemperature level. But if I slow down to 60 mph or so the temperature level will be at a little higher than normal but okay. If I step on it to pass a vehicle the temperature level will rise quickly until I slow down to around 60 mph which will allow the temperature level to lower.

I changed out the thermostat which did not make any difference. My radiator level is good and steady, not losing water. The water pump does not appear to be making any unusual noises nor is it leaking.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?

I'm wondering if you have a plug in your heater hose, or in the cooling system. Has you cooling system every been flushed?

Maybe the clutch on the fan blade isn't engaging to spin the blade? If you've already swapped out the thermostat (and you're sure you put it in the correct way) then the next thing I'd check is the fan clutch. Other than that, I had a Bronco II that kept overheating, even after replacing the thermostat, fan clutch, and waterpump. I finally took it to a radiator shop, and the repairman took the radiator apart and showed me where some of the metals in the antifreeze had balled up and were blocking several tubes on the radiator, keeping it from cooling the way it should. Since most radiators aren't rebuildable any more, I had to spring for a new radiator. With the new radiator, all the overheat problems were gone. just a thought.

The radiator has not been flushed. I had never seen it before where the heater did not work.

You might want to keep an eye on you cooling system, Mine was properly maintaining and my water pump disintegrated. The dealer had to flush the system real good, to get all the crap out. Just my .02.

As far as the cabin heater , stuck damper , mine does the same thing , there is something wrong with the dampner for the temperature control.

I don't know the fix yet ....

What I have learned is to NOT put the temp control on max hot or max cold , leave a little room to jiggle the knob both directions. Otherwise , if I left it maxed out one way or the other , I have to remember to move the control before I start it , or I am usually stuck with it where it is until I shut the truck off for awhile.
Sounds stupid , but what can I tell you , I have not trouble shot it yet.

You may have an air lock on the right (passengers side) water jacket this is where the heater hose goes in or comes out of the block. It will show hotter than normal temp and there will be no heat from the heater. I had this once when I changed out the coolant.
I hope this helps. Joe
