Time for a new turbo...suggestions?

I am getting a ton of smoke and I have quite a bit of lateral movement in the turbo shaft, but not much endplay. I guess it's time for a replacement, but I wouldn't mind doing an upgrade at the same time. I'm on stock injectors so I'm not looking for a huge improvement, and I'm trying to stay as cheap as possible. What's the difference with a van turbo? Also, is it necessary to replace the pedestal at the same time? I've got 125,000 miles on the truck.

Re: Time for a new turbo...suggestions?

It isn't necessary to replace the pedestal, but it is a nice piece to use. As for the turbo, I would recommend rebuilding your stocker. It sounds likke the turbine seal is not in good shape, along with the bearings. A rebuild kit is fairly cheap. As for the van turbo, it has a non wastegated 1.15 turbine housing, (larger than the stock .84) with a different trimmed turbine wheel. it is a nice turbo. If you can find one cheap, I would run it. Otherwise, rebuild yours, if you're on the cheap.

Re: Time for a new turbo...suggestions?

Or send it to Ron's Turbo in Utah, for $310 he will completely rebuild your stock one. For $150 he will sell you the non EBV Pedestal and the appropriate outlet housing that actually has a little better flow. For another $70, he will install the Banks wheel which is like the Wicked wheel, and will elliminate surge under load, and he said helps the turbo spool a bit faster.

The total for me was $550 with shipping, and I just got it back yesterday, and am installing it tomorrow. Best way to find him is to look for him on Ebay, search for powerstroke turbo, and his number is on there, he has an excellent reputation.

I also thought of going with Turbonetics or Garret Ball Bearing turbos, but the end result was really no extra hp, unless you add fuel system mods, which is a big step up in $$$.

Good luck...

Re: Time for a new turbo...suggestions?

I have had Ron rebuild several turbos for me as well. He does excellent work.
