I know tranny and t/c ?'s pop up here alot, I read 'em, search for them and study them but I am still left with questions. I posted awhile back about my 2-3 shift which seemed like it was shifting twice. First a 200rpm drop...5 sec. pause....then the rest of the shift into 3rd approx 400rpm drop. I changed the fluid/filter, added the sonnax/tri....no help. I bought the t/c lockup led but talked myself out of installing it.
Now, I have added a 40hp tow tune from Jody (he and his tune are awesome ). The shift schedule has completely changed but I still have the double shift into 3rd. And, like others have posted in the past, my 1-2 shift is firm, 2-3 harsh and 3-4 very harsh. The harshness changes with the way I accelerate.
Is it possible that I am seeing the t/c lockup and then the shift into 3rd (or vice versa)?
I have no unusual noises, and do not recognize any slippage. I am very concerned that I am seeing 4 shifts instead of 3 and the harshness of the shifts.
Thanks guys for any help....
One of your "double" shifts is the TC lockup and the other is a change in gears. I would not worry. I would contact Jody about the shifting if it is changing the way you drive.

If it happens at around 40 MPH, yes. Or if Jody changed the torque converter lockup strategy, then you'll have to ask him at what speed or RPM the torque convertor should lock up.
If you have a digital tach - such as the Ford auxiliary idle controller (AIC) - then you can easily tell the difference in the TC lockup and a tranny shift. With a warmed up tranny, the TC lockup drops engine RPM by about 200 at about 37 MPH, but a tranny shift will drop engine RPM 400 to 600 or more, depending on throttle position.

You may need to change to the updated Orange color capped Solenoid pack in your tranny to fix this issue. There is a TSB out about it, but I don't have a link for it.
Good luck bocat, I am following this question. I had similar problems but I really think Jody's tune fixed the problem in mine. I do have the orange packs in mine. Hammer told me to double check that when I had the pan down. Made me fell a bit better. But good luck!

I almost forgot another thing besides the orange solenoids. It doesn't hurt to check the torque of the nuts and bolts of all the other valve bodies and solenoid pack. There was a guy who was having similar issues a while back and all he did was loosen and re-torque all the solenoid fasteners and his flare was fixed. When I installed my BTS valve body, I decided to torque check all the other nuts and bolts and discovered three that were significantly lose.
I am not familiar with the orange capped solenoid pack and did not notice anything like that while putting the sonnax mod in but I did check the torque of all the valvle bodies and they where all good. I also saw a post recemmending to check those. If anyone has more info on the orange capped solenoid pack I would like to see it. I am really starting to think that I am worrying about nothing and that the 'extra shift' is just the t/c locking up. I am going to try to get an analyzer to plug in and see if that is what it is, I will post results.
i have the same thing. i have a early 99 with jody's pmt1 and 40hp tune. when i am at half throttle or less the t/c locks during the shift to third. it loses a lot of rmp and my truck kinda falls flat. if i am towing or over half throttle it does not lock untill after the shift to 3rd and works good
You know what, maybe that is my problem. I did recheck the torque like Hammer said and did notice that some of them were loose. But there were some that would "snap" from sitting and then allow you to snug them up. Not a very good practice when torquing, but I was in a real hurry to get the project done. Stupid me! Maybe I should loosen them and do it accurately like this other person did. When you are dealing with 85 inch/lb....a little "snap" would probably be 10 or more lbs. Never thought about that. THANKS Hammer!

The older solenoid packs have green caps if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure that is what would be in your 99. I am not sure what time that Ford made the switch to the orange. I have a Ford Reman in my truck and have no idea when the reman was installed. It has the Orange caps and don't know if they were on all 2001's or if it was an upgrade when my tranny was replaced with a reman.
