Tranny cooler question

Tomorrow I'll be receiving my Factory Tech Valve Body, and either tomorrow afternoon or Wed morning I'll be installing it, and doing a tranny flush and change to Mobil 1. On the FAQ, it says to remove the cooler return line and clamp the tubing over it. I just want to make 100% sure I've got the right line...it's the rear metal line(on the passenger side) that then joins up with another line just like it that attaches to the front of the tranny, correct? By joins up, I mean they are just routed side by side - not join to become 1 line. This is the line I need to drain until air starts coming out, then shut the engine off - right?

BTW, just a quick note...I ordered the FTVB(as well as a few other things) from Bob at Dieselsite, but he was out of the valves. I found this out on Saturday(I placed the order on Thurs night). When he told me he was out, and that Gregg would be shipping them directly to customers, I told him I was leaving on a trip(with the truck) on Friday morning. Long story short, he had Gregg overnight it(at their expense, not mine) to me so that I'll have it tomorrow and can get everything sqaured away before the trip. Can't beat customer service like that! Thanks Bob!

Re: Tranny cooler question

Aviatrr,

Yes, you have the right line. The one at the BACK of the tranny is the return from the coolers.

Your experience with Bob Riley and Gregg Evans is typical I've done business with both and my experience matches yours.

Re: Tranny cooler question

Just make sure the transmission is up to temperature or you will have a BIG MESS.

Ok...why, exactly, would it be a big mess? I'll definitely make sure I go out and drive it for 15-20 miles before I start the job....but, I can't figure out exactly why it would be a mess if I didn't? Is the problem prevalent in cold climates, or any?

Re: Tranny cooler question

The 4R100 transmission has a external fluid bypass for cold operation on the side of the transmission where the cooler lines attach. When the transmission is cold no fluid goes through the cooler lines or coolers ,it's bypassed. When you remove the line and run it cold it will shoot out of the rear port and by the time you notice it you will have many quarts of fluid on the ground and none in your recovery bucket. It can happen in any climate areas. Hope this makes sense.

Re: Tranny cooler question

make sure you have the right size line also. mine took an inside diameter of 3/8, I bought a bigger one originally and had to walk to the store to get a smaller one in the middle of the process, what a mess that made

edit: I ordered my valve and tranny cooler from him last week also. shoud be here on wed. guess I should have waited to flush my tranny, but I just had to work on my truck this weekend

What FordMasterTech said. Remember where you wrote: "it's the rear metal line(on the passenger side) that then joins up with another line just like it that attaches to the front of the tranny, correct?"

That "other line just like" it is the bypass line. The bypass valve is on the front of the tranny, where that bypass line connects to the tranny in the same place as the cooler hot line. The connection on both ends of the bypass line is called a "banjo" connection - where two lines are connected together and become one.

When the ATF is cold, the bypass valve sends it right back into the back of the tranny instead of to the coolers. When it tries to go back into the tranny, you have it disconnected right there, so the cold bypassed ATF squirts out onto the driveway instead of turning the corner and going back into the tranny.

Tecnhically, the bypass valve works on pressure, not temp. But the effect is that hot ATF goes to the coolers and cold ATF bypasses the coolers and goes right back into the rear of the tranny.

Almost but not exactly correct. You are correct about the mess but there is still fluid going to the cooler when cold. The colder fluid doesn't flow as easily so there is more volume being pushed thru the bypass valve. This is the same principle as the oil pump relief valve in your engine. Does the oil bypass the engine bearings and go straight back to the oil pan when it is cold?
