Transfer case service

I was just about to change out the fluid in my 2001 F350 PSD's transfer case, and fluid poured from the fill hole. I live in a subdivision and didn't want to booger up the street if it leaked so I was going to use my Pella oil extractor. When I cracked open the filler, a huge stream of ATF came out.

Here's the questions. Is the filler hole approx. 4" above the drain on the rear side of the case? Secondly if so how could they over fill it, so that it poured?

Re: Transfer case service

Have you been loosing any fluid from the transmission that you can't figure out where it's going? Sounds like the input seal on the transfer case is allowing fluid from the transmission to enter the transfer case. I see this quite a bit on all sorts of 4x4 vehicles.

Re: Transfer case service

4" above sounds about right....and about the same distance to the right(as looking at it from the rear facing forward).

Sure you were on level ground when you checked it? If so, maybe it was filled while it was not on level ground.

Re: Transfer case service

Well I just bought the truck last week. The tranny fliud looks nasty, but the transfer case look almost brand new. When I cracked the filler open it spewed like a drain plug would. Hmmmm I might have to take a look at the seal.

The street in front of my home is perfectly level.

Sounds like previous owner filled the transfer case on a hill.
