Transmission Cooler install?

Iam planning on ordering a Hayden cooler for my 99SD. I have seen a couple of install articles showing a optiona fan. Is this needed? My trans only heats up when towing in stop and go driving or steep grades.

Re: Transmission Cooler install?

Welcome to the TDS forum!

If you don't have the upgraded radiator with the tranny oil to water (OTW) cooler in the bottom, I'd recommend a cooler with fan to handle those stop and go and slow speed hill climb situations. I do not have the OTW cooler on mine and even with the large True Cool Max aux cooler I get uncomfortable in the situations you describe.

Re: Transmission Cooler install?

Look into finding one of the Torqueshift Coolers! Richter69 put one on my unit listed below and it went from 220 to 230 hauling my camper to I could not make it go over 180 on a HOT Oklahoma afternoon with air temp of about 103 and pavement temps of about 135. Hot enough that you stand on it with your tennis shoes they start to feel soft!

Re: Transmission Cooler install?

Old_machinist,
No flames intended, the issue with the early '99s is that unlike on your '96, Ford did not use a tranny cooler in the bottom of the radiator, just an oil to air cooler sandwiched between the other heat exchangers. In traffic and slow speed hill climbs with the torque converter unlocked, the air flow over the coolers is just too little to keep things comfortably cool.

Re: Transmission Cooler install?

Don't worry I have flame proof undies LOL. Jon unhooked the water to oil part of the system. All I have is the huge torqueshift cooler. Mine is not a daily driver as I only use it to haul camper or take it out once a week or so to keep it limbered up and to get my "fix"
