Transmission Problem using new Mercon V?

My neighbor owns a 2002 F350, he changed his transmission fluid at 20,000 miles, 45,000 miles using mercon. At 70,000 miles he put the new Mercon V in and now at 81,000 miles his transmission is trashed. He never towed anything heavier than his riding lawn mower. He is convinced that the new Mercon V Killed his tranny. Coincidence? or is the only thing new about Mercon V the label? I was about to change my transmission fluid using the new Mervon V but now I am a little freaked out about using it. Anyone heard of this happening? Anyone used the new stuff and put on any real mileage yet? What can you use besides the new Mercon V?

Your neighbor has a 4R100 tranny, he should use Dextron/Mercon not Mercon V (5) . Pretty sure I read this somewhere in Fords bulletines. He should read his manual, that shows what tranny fluid to use. Safe way is use synthetic ATF.

You can still get the Mercon/Dexron III dino fluid. Look at Sam's club. It says something like "for use in vehicles requiring Mercon/Dexron III fluid" on the bottle. The Mercon V fluid is supossed to be reformulated so it will work in our transmissions. I still use the Merco/Dexron III because I can.

That's outdated information.

Ford has discontinued MERCON. Sometime before that they reformulated MERCON V to make it compatible with transmissions that required MERCON.

MERCON V is now the right fluid for the 4R100.

Did MERCON V kill the trans? I have no idea without inspecting the trans.

Why not run Dextron/MerIII if you can get it as the previous poster
mentioned? Rather than a re-formulated mix of DexV??

Your neighbor may have had the famous mechanical diode.... That thing just loves to fail around that milage..

You can. I am in my 4R100, but only because I still have enough MERCON in my garage from one more change.

DO NOT use DexV!!!!!! That will most likely kill a Ford transmission. DexV is a GM fluid, who knows what it will do in a Ford?

Does that mean you will use the new Mercon V after you use up your Mercon, Mark? Are you have confident that the new Mercon V will not cause any damage to the 4R100?

Maybe.

The MERCON is going into the van in the next couple days. The van is used to tow the travel trailer, and haul other things. It doesn't get a lot of miles anymore. The wife is starting to make noises about getting a fifth wheel, and the van isn't going to tow it. If I still own the van when the next change is due I will use MERCON V.

"But are you confident the new Mercon V will not damage the 4R100?????", He repeated.

Yes, I am confident that the new MERCON V will not damage a 4R100.

I thought I may have made that point when I said I would use it in my next change on my 4R100 if I still own it then, but I must not have been clear.

Typo... intended MerV... Thanks for the clarification though.

Thanks for the reply, Mark. I was not sure if you meant you were going to use it just because you did not drive it much and inteneded to sell it. I trust your knowledge on this subject and wanted to know were you stood before I put it in my truck. I only have 80,000 miles on my 2003 and plan to keep it for quite awhile!
Thanks again,
Ben

I recommend mobil 1 synthetic, available at walmart for under $6 per quart. Start stocking up on it, because you will need 20 quarts for the change, and walmart tends to have only about five on the shelf at a time.
