Truck running rough check engine light on

Hi guys, I started my truck this morning and pulled out of drive, made it 4 houses down road and motor lost power and started running very rough and check engine light came on. I pulled over and drained fuel filter hose, replaced fuel filter and let it sit for a while, and still idled very rough like it was running on 6 or 7 cylinders. I did get it home and let it sit for 4 hrs and restarted and it idled fine, then 5 min later hit the gas ped and check engine light came back on and was running rough again. could this be fuel pump, bad fuel or what else. Not sure if I should get it towed to shop.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks again,
Chip

Could be fuel issues, but my guess would be more likely an Under Valve Cover Harness coming loose, disabling one or more injectors.

Your best course of action would be to get it scanned with a PSD capable scan tool (one that will do the Injector Buzz Test).

You'll know better which way to go after that.

My 2002 was doing the same thing it was the two little screen filters inside the fuel pickup in the tank.

Is it hard to drop tank? I've never done that before.

Thanks,
Chip

Don't drop the tank... it is easier to just disconnect the fuel inlet line from the frame mounted fuel pump and attach a hose from a different fuel source (jerry can) to verify (or eliminate) the fuel source as being your issue...

but I would have to agree that you've likely got a UVC connector coming apart. If time equals money, then a diagnosis would cost less than the time it would take to remove the fuel tank.

The odds are unless you buy your fuel from a crappy little podunk station regularly your screens are not clogged. I always buy my fuel from truck stops, (PLaces with a HIGH turnover in the supply) that way there is much less chance of any algae growing in it. Or getting extremely dirty fuel. I have had my tanks down at one time or another in each of the trucks I have owned. The tanks were clean as can be, absolutely NOTHING in there that could clog. (Now like I said, if your not careful where you buy at regularly, there is the distinct chance you could have that happen), I imagine it's the UVC also. (Did you get a CEL?) If so, and there are IDM codes, then check the harness.
