Like the title says it tuns over by it's self. heard a noise went outside and the truck was turning over. Had to pull the battery cables to make it stop reconnect them and start's cranking again. The overdrive light started flashing to day also don't know if it was confidence or not. really need help with this one.

perform an excorsism, if that does not work I would be looking at the wiring in the steering column. The o.d. light and starting on it's own would put me there anyway. There are a lot of guys on here with WAY more knowledge then me, sure someone has some ideas.

I had a mustang that did this. Turned out to be the security/alarm/remote start system.

Sounds more like gremlins to me. But the wiring from the starter switch is probably a close second.

The day my truck starts itself is probably the day it finds itself at the bottom of a cliff. I can't even handle an automatic tranny because they want to think on their own.

There is a shift lever on an auto too. I can put it in what ever gear I want it to be in. And when I am eating while driving in bumper to bumper traffic and don't have to worry about shifting or a clutch

He just said it was cranking, not actually starting. Wouldn't be anything involved with the fuel system.

I think it is going to be the ecm because I disconnected the stater wires and hooked the batterys up, the blower motor, out side step lights came on and some relays started clicking on and off. But just in case I'm wrong I called a priest.

Before you go blaming the PCM, check your batteries. Low voltage makes many of the control modules do strange things. The electronic relays in GEM must need a certain voltage to stay open. The clicking relays is a sign of low voltage as well.

It could be as simple as low batteries. That wouldn't explain the phantom cranking, as none of the starter circuit controls go thru the GEM. Maybe you should keep that priest on retainer till you get it figured out.

I thought the same thing but the battery's check fine. been driving it to day but as soon as it start's have to pull the energizer wire off the solenoid to keep the starter from engaging.

its the oddest thing.. this morning I'm prepping tools for a job and outside the garage I hear someone trying to start their car but it wouldn't start lol it reminded to go warm mine up before i left and as I approach mine begins cranking over... I think you pushed your possessed trucks demon onto mine... I would go check yours cause it should be working now rofl...

Im not sure about the original poster but this started right after it rained all night.. Im assuming water is dripping on the ecm?

PS: Also not sure if its the case with yours but mine is starting randomly and not all the time.. I started the truck and it ran for about 5 minutes before the starter tried again..

After doing some testing it appears that there is continuity between the frame and the power which I assume is what is causing everything to go crazy.. Ive been doing a lot of reading could the gem or fuse box maybe be shorting and transferring power to ground somehow? Im also assuming this is because of the rain because I am getting water dripping down from around the gem/fuse box.

I apologize if I'm jacking the thread 2fastc I figured our problems are similar maybe mine is being caused by the same thing so it could help both of us.

The starting system has nothing to do with the electronics, so don't waste your time looking at that.

The cabling from the battery goes directly to the starter mounted solenoid, and the cable from the starter relay on the fender is what triggers the starter solenoid. The starter relay is triggered by a 12V signal coming from the fuse box, thru the ignition switch and the clutch pedal position switch (manual tranny) or Transmission Range Sensor (auto tranny). That signal lands on the starter relay on the small wire.

Pull that off and if the starter still self cranks, then the problem is either in the starter relay or the starter itself. The starter relay is about 12 bucks, so wouldn't hurt too much to replace as a test, or you could just disconnect the output wire from the relay to the starter. Then if it still self cranks, the starter solenoid is the cuplrit.
