truck wont start in park, or go in

So here's the problem(99' f360 auto 4x4) It is very difficult to put the truck in park(the transmission wont grab?) it feels like its mostly in the steering/shifter column, I have to slam it or fish for it and the transmission will eventually grab park...And when it is in parked(P) the truck wont start just clicks near the fuse panel?

The starter is fine and I messed with the shifter indicator cable under the column but that didnt change anything..I just have to through it in Neutrul to start the truck...this happened last weekend with no warning just very wierd.Would this have to do with the actual transmisson gear actuator on the driverside on the tranny?
-thanks guys

Yes, it could the be Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) on the side of the trans. I'm betting more on something is caught behind the shift linkage near that sensor, like a small rock.

I checked for any rocks/twigs what have you and nothing its clean...The only thing I can tell is when the shifter is in (p) as far it will go, I can move the actuator clockwise about 1/16th of a turn and kinda make a soft click...It wont stay by its self..Is this click actual park?

I read somewhere else my problem might be a pull the tranny pan and have an expert look at it...-Thanks guys

Pull the fuse panel cover, lay on the floor on your back, look upfor the cable going to the gear shifter, wiggle the gear shifter, look at the end where the cable goes in. There are two torx head bolts that are loose. Take those out put red locktite and reinstall.

I bet it won't go in to 1 good either?

I'm having the same problem, 99 F250 7.3 Auto. about a month ago it just started to get a little hard to shift into park, sometimes it would be neutral or reverse. It has gotten even worse now, I have to jam it up there hard or wiggle it a little to get it to go in there, really frustrating.

But mine will start when it's in park. But sometimes it won't start cause it's not actually in park, I just think it is. I engage the parking brake every time now, just to be sure it doesn't roll away on me one day!!

I will try what duckboat suggested and report back. Any more suggestions?
Thanks,

i have the same problem but mine is the park issue. I have an 2001 F 350 7.3L Auto and when i want to start the truck it wont. What i do now when putting it in park is that once the gear is in park i hold it there then remove the brake then let go of the gear and so far i havent had any problems.

Had a similar issue. Turned out the bolts had come loose on the shifter. And the bushing broke on the top side. Replaced the bushing, tighten the scews and that did the trick. The shifter was super sloppy before this and it was a guessing game where it would land. Had to remove the top and bottome steering cover to see it the bushing. But the screws as duckboat metioned can be seen from below.
