I've had a couple people now tell me they can hear a whisp whisp whisp sound when I get on it in my 7.3 PSD. I can't hear a thing due to too much shooting w/o earmuffs, but a tranny mechanic and just recently a master certified tech was riding in my truck and pointed it out to me. The tech suggested that it's probably a leak in one of the boots or possibly the turbo itself has gotten loose. He also noted the definite loss in power that should be there when I step on it. I bought the truck w/ 83K on it and it now has 133k.....the leak could have been there all this time, so I really don't have a power reference to go by.
I'd rather try to tackle what seems pretty simple myself, but since I can't hear where the noise is coming from, is there anything I can spray around the boots that causes different engine operation to try and isolate the leak?
And I'm assuming it'd be the red 'output' boots and not the blue 'intake' boots to the turbo, right?
It is possible you have a leaking turbo hose. Just tighten up the clamps and see if it makes a difference. BTW, there is considerable "flutter" that comes from the exhaust. It is noise made by the turbine wheel (on the exhaust side) and is more audible with aftermarket exhaust. You can especially hear it with the passenger side window down and running along side a bridge railing or inside a parking garage where it is reflected back towards you. That may be what they are talking about in which case it is normal.

Oh it can get really bright with ether!!! Just tighten ALL of the boots (6) and check for soot on the up-pipe connections.Like Haulin' said, you may be experiencing flutter, that's normal.

OK, go ahead and lower and shake your head.......the up-pipes are the red ones that feed the bottom of the turbo, right? There's definitely a little soot around the top, blue pipes, but while searching for my issue, I thought I read on a different post that the top boots will usually have soot around them.....
I'll definitely tighten the clamps 'cause according to the tech I had riding with me (who actually also owns a F250 PSD), I should be pushed more back in the seat when accelerating than I already am....I'd sure hate to think my manly diesel was under-powered!!
Your up-pipes come off of your exhaust manifolds and curve up feed exhaust into the backside of your turbo. The red boots below your turbo that connect to the heads are usually bad culprits for leaking to.
