turbo stall?

I was towing my boat to the Ozarks last Saturday and when i would pull a good hill in OD, it would drop to 3rd every so often. I was driving 64 MPH pulling a 3500lbs boat on cruise control. So here is my problem or question.

When on cruise and the truck went from OD to 3rd, it would almost fall on its face. I couldn't get any power from it and it just seemed to lose its boost. Plus, it wasn't hardly blowing any black smoke. When off the cruise one time, I gave it extra throttle and it downshifted but it just put out a puff of smoke and flew up the hill! What happened? Was the downshift so quick that the turbo didn't have a chance to keep up or what? Maybe I don't understand the turbo thing. Also, when this happened, I think there was a "chirp" or a high pitched noise.

If anybody could give me a little bit of advise, that would be great!

Re: turbo stall?

Would the WW cure this? I hate tearing the turbo off because of leaking issues, but if this will fix it, I am game!

Re: turbo stall?

With those many miles, it could be a whole host of things that could be causing your problems. I would say that when you open up the intake and exhaust even without a chip or programmer, you can still get surge. Installing a WW could help, but you could also be losing boost from a bad pedastil and Y pies leaking. I guess I'd start with the WW and see if it cleared up. Since you're still under warranty, maybe the thing to do is take it to the stealer and see what they say. It will only cost you $100 deductable to find out, but I would take the KnN out first.

Re: turbo stall?

Thanks pappy, I will definitely start looking for a leak in the plumbing. That could be. I had all the boots snugged up about 4 months ago, but could have worked loose.

Why would you ditch the K&N? I got a blackstone back and the said my air and oil filtration were perfect. I was going to ditch it too, but after my blackstone report, I think I am going to hang onto it.

Will a person get turbo stall with a stock filter? I am still running a stock air box and just a drop in K&N filter.

Any more suggestions out there?

Can you get it, stall / surge with a stock filter? Yes, you can. Surge or flow stall is a characteristic of blowers under changing outlet openings. These wheel and housing arrangements don't eliminate it they just reduce it or the possibility in certain operational circumstances.

Re: turbo stall?

is the WW the best choice? i have done a few upgrades and would like to do a few more but i haven't had alot of good info. while i'm in there is it worth while to install a new housing? does it improve performance that much? also, has anyone changed the air-filter-to-turbo inlet ducting to create a more laminar flow? has there been any noticeable gains.

I was just saying that if you decide to take it to the dealer, I would take off the KnN before you take it there. Just in case the dealer tries to not recognize a warranty issue when you have an after market air filter, as they could use that as an excuse. After you get home, go ahead and put the KnN filter back on.

Re: turbo stall?

Ahhh, understood. I thought you were pointing a finger at the filter being a problem. I did notice that there was an oily buildup on the filter tube leading to the turbo. I should probably take that off and clean it then re-install that. I would doubt that would be where my problem is, but maybe a small start.

Thanks for the advise!

Re: turbo stall?

One tough, last boating season was my first time towing with my 2000 PSD X. I also tow to LOTO and have to go through some nice hills. I towed bone stock last year and it would get doggy just like yours if I was doing 55 - 65 mph. I had to be going faster and I it would still shift out of OD at times going up grade. After doing all/most of my mods below it tows unbelievably now I did the Tymar intake, Walker BTM, Wicked Wheel (I do not experience stall/surge while towing and have never heard a chirping sound...just a nice high pitched whisle/wine when boost goes up), and several other little mods to the engine. The icing on the cake was my Edge Evolution programmer. I tow my 6K - 7K lb. boat with it set in the 80HP Race mode. I have had zero problems with egt's or tranny temps. It will flat out pull now I can set the cruise just about anywhere on the highway and it holds that speed. I usually set it on 70 - 75mph. and whistle down the road. Do yourself a favor and budget in some gauges and a programmer to increase your power. I can't drive mine stock anymore...it's a slow pig stock.

Re: turbo stall?

Jeff27, great to hear that there are many others enjoying the lake this summer. Just got back, very hot! Water was 80 degrees. Where do you stay and when do you normally go?

Back to the subject. I have never had this problem before this trip. Hauled the boat to Minnesota and never had a problem. Just wondering if this had anything to do with the quick shifts due to the Sonnax/tricumulator mod. I think I am now having trans problems going into OD. makes me real frustrated that I can't pinpoint what is going on with this thing. I would like to get the mods you have, but I don't have deep pockets right now. I just throw whatever little I have right now into inexpensive yet "good for the long haul" mods. As you can tell by my sig, I haven't done much, but it has helped performance some. I get great mileage and that is what is important for my job. I have enough power 95% of the time.

I talked to Jody about programming my computer. Said he can fix some of the shifting issues, but I want to get them fixed mechanically if there is a problem. I do want to get a programmer or get Jody to work his magic, but that takes money and I need to keep this truck on the road!

Thanks for your input Jeff. Maybe we will see you at Kincaide this year? Now I know what your boat looks like!

Regards!

Re: turbo stall?

Well good luck! Yeah, we have a soon to be 15 month old son and another son due the first week of September...so my boating has slowed down a little for the time being All in good time..can't wait to have them both on the water.
