Water in fuel sensor - How does it work?

At work we need to add a "water in the oil" sensor for one of our products. I suggested to one of the engineers that we use the sensor from a 7.3 PS, asuming it was a simple resistance based device. Looks to be a bad assumption on my part.

The question is, how does this sensor work, how do you test it?

Thanks, Mark

I'm pretty sure it is a resistance device. The PCM monitors it using one wire, and the sensor itself has a ground on the other end internally. If water gets in the fuel bowl, it reduces the resistance the PCM sees and sets a code, along with turning on the WIF light. I have no idea what the resistance would be though under either non-water or water conditions.
