What is the difference between the '99's and 99.5's? My '99 SD was produced in April of '98. Is the 7.3 and tranny the same? I see a lot of places selling parts breaking it down to the half year.
Thanks,
Marty

April of '98?
Lifted from Strokin Early 99 elsewhere on the web:
Quote:
Early 99 has a wicked wheel in it from the factory.
The early99 has 120cc(AB code) injectors and the late99-03 has 140cc(AD code) injectors.
The early99 IDM operates at 110V, that late99-03 operates at 120V.
The early99 has 2" intake runners. The late99-03 has 3" intake runners.
The early99 has a 15* swash plate HPOP. The late99-03 has a 17* swash plate HPOP.
The early99 has one glow plug relay. The late99-03 has one glow plug relay and one air intake heater relay side by side. Both relays are on the passenger side valve cover toward the front of the truck.
The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03.
The early99 has a totally different air filter that is not inter changeable with the late99-03. But you can put the late99 air cleaner assembly in the early99 truck. The only two aftermarket air filters that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS.
The early99 track rod has smaller mounting bolts than the late99-03.
The early99 has shallower rotors than the late99-03.
The early99 has shorter hub-bearings than the late99-03.
The early99 front axle U bolts are square where they go over the spring pack. The late99 U bolts are round.
The early99 has a different pitman arm than the late99-03. I believe it is the same as the 1997.
The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control. Some early99 truck has the light in the dash already. A newer PCM(Yes it will plug in and will run better too) must be used to make the cruise light illuminate. It is a green light on the right side edge, half way up.
And there are more.

How do you know what engine parts are differnt on my truck since it was built 12-1-98. I just installed a K and N cold air intake and it fits. then I look and dont see a AIH. so do I have the old style turbo or not same thing with the injectors. What would be the best way to find out all of this.

With your build date and no AIH, you have an early 99, built about a week before the "official" changeover date. You surely have an old style turbo and the smaller injectors.
Easiest way is to find someone with a 99.5 or 2000 truck and pop the hoods for comparison.
ok, thanks for the info. I was just not sure because I seen that in the 99 FAQ it says it started to switch over on 12-1-98 and ended 12-8-98. I did not know if it was one all at once or a little at a time engine wise. Is there any diadvantges to an early 99?

I think the cosmetic stuff like badge location, etc. strung out a bit on the changeover. But AFAIK the engine mods came all at once: Most likely at some point in production, an early 99 engine was followed by a 99.5 engine.
The chassis stuff like rotors, etc that haul_n_horses2 listed came even later than the engine stuff. My truck 1/99 build had the early style rotors/wheel bearing hubs and smaller track bar. The changeover for that stuff was March 99.
There aren't any real disadvantages to an early 99, except if you're thinking about aftermarket turbos. There are many more drop-in's available for 99.5's than early 99's. Most early 99 guys either upgrade to the 99.5 pedestal, etc. or go for a complete turbo kit.
