Why did they quit making the 7.3 anyhow?

What were they trying to accomplish by going to the 6.0 instead of the 7.3? Not knocking it, as it seems like they have it right now, just curious. I wasnt really into diesels back then...........

I believe it had to do with emission regulations.

I would guess marketing strategies played a part too, the old "we have a new diesel" angle to counter the chevy and dodge offerings. They have it about as right as it's going to be since the 6.4's are coming.

The 6.0 was a "stop-gap" motor. The 7.3 didn't have the provision for EGR to reduce NOx emissions and both Navistar and Ford had to do something or face heavy fines or even a stop production order....

The 6.0 didn't come about so someone could brag it up... but having it "happen" opened up advertising opportunities....

While Ford dropped the 7.3L PowerStroke in 2004, I believe Navistar continued to produce the 7.3L ("T444e") for use in their medium-duty trucks through 2005 (possibly into 2006).

The VT365 is Navistar's version of the 6.0L PowerStroke. Ford dropped the 6.0 because of reliablity issues as well as emissions mandates. Navistar continues to produce the VT365.

7.3L production in North America stopped in 2003. The tooling was moved to either Brazil or Argentina (can't rightly remember which), and continued for a while for use outside of North America (notably Aussie SuperDuty trucks). I'm not sure if it's still in production there or not.

Why? Emissions. The 7.3L wouldn't pass the 2004 NOx and particulate emissions, wouldn't even come close.
