Well, a couple years ago, in Huatabampito (Mexico) we had 1/2 the wiring harness replaced. Much of the same problems we're having now. Acceleration is intermittent and when we try to accelerate we get big clouds of white smoke. Turbo works very well, but it feels like the engine is "missing" sometimes at acceleration. hard to describe. It is like you hit the gas (diesel) and nothing happens but you can tell it is trying, white smoke is issuing from the tailpipe and finally something catches and you have acceleration. Also, mileage is about 1/2 normal. We "gassed" up about 75 miles ago and have used 1/4 tank so far - we normally get 150 miles to the 1/4 tank.
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a mechanic in Muskogee, OK? We were enroute home (Mexico) and are staying in a hotel until this is fixed.
Was it your UVCH ( under valve cover harnesses ) that were replaced before? they might have come apart at connector. Just to rule it out unplug your ICP sensor, top of engine behind alternator at valve cover rail 2wire harness and start engine to see how it runs if same plug it back in. If it solves problem leave it unplugged til you get a new sensor. I'm sure someone else will respond soon with better advise. This is something simple to rule out yourself. Good luck

I was pretty lucky to understand "wiring harness" in the plethora of Spanish I was exposed to at the time. I really have no idea WHAT they did, but it was a Ford dealership so I'm hopeful they did everything they were supposed to. It ran fine for 3 years, so I'm guessing they did. I'll have hubby check what you suggested and see what comes up. Thanks!
He couldn't find the ICP sensor - this is a 2002 E350, so maybe that makes a difference. The van forum doesn't seem to get much traffic and rv.net suggested I post here.

The ICP sensor is on the driver's side head just behind the alternator (probably the worst spot to get to on a van). Here's a pic of the location on a pickup. That may help him locate it.
The vantage point here is probaby right at the base of your windshield on your van, so he's probably going to have to use the braille method. The bolt head on the lower left is one of the alternator mounting bolts.
I just saw a picture of a E-450 and the air conditioner is where the truck alternator is. So your ICP in a VAN might be behind your AC compressor. Which ever, it is on the drivers side as pointed out above by klhansen. Sorry I should have mentioned Drivers side in my earlier post

Send a PM to 444-4D on here. He might be able to help you out. He's in Tulsa.

Thanks so much everyone! Got the van to the Ford dealer (we're in the middle of a long journey and with the holiday coming up I really wanted it taken care of today) and they found GAS in the tank!!! I know I filled it with diesel and my receipt even shows diesel was sold, so it isn't faulty memory. We're filling up once a day (due to driving 400 some odd miles daily - roadtrip) so I can't imagine it was anything other than the Quick Trip #37 in Bartlesville Oklahoma. I also noticed that the problem started very soon (like 5 miles) after dieseling up. (do you guys still say "gas up"?)
I only put in 1/2 a tank of bad diesel and it definitely did NOT smell like gasoline when I pumped the diesel, so I'm hoping the amount of gas in the diesel was low.
Dealership is dropping the tank, emptying it, flushing the system and replacing the fuel filter. Any other ideas?
Well if this is correct it looks like someone messed up while refilling the underground tanks at the station.Wonder how many other diesel customers are in your predicument. Have you contacted the station yet to give them a HEADS UP to have it checked out ?

Yes, I did. I'm also wondering if they got other complaints.

Hopefully they did, then that would be proof it happened there. Their insurance should cover your bill for the FIX. Did the work to your van get done ?
