I have an 02 Ford F-350 7.3 Powerstroke. Truck runs great with no issues if it has low coolant and no Smoke. If it has coolant in it (usually leaks out though within a Week), it will startup ****ty and have to use Ether to start it. Has anyone else had this Problem?
Have you checked your oil lately? If you pull the dipstick and it looks like chocolate pudding, that will tell you that your coolant is getting into the crankcase. It's pretty rare, but you may have a head gasket problem or cracked or pinholed block. Otherwise, the coolant leakdown point is external and should be visible.
The reason you should never use starting fluid is that the PSD has glow plugs that can light off the ether prematurely and possibly cause major damage to the engine or injury to you.
When it does start when you top off the coolant, is there any white smoke or vapor coming out the exhaust. I know you said no smoke, but you should double check that.
It's summer now (most places), but you might want to check out your glow plug system for the hard starting. Check the link in my signature.
klhansen I have checked the Oil and it looked Perfect! That's what's got me Wondering what else it could be... But I have people telling me Injector Cups Man? Is that Possible?
The tell tale sign i know of that injector cups need replacement is when their is actually diesel in your coolant tank. it will be noticeable as it will be on top of the coolant.
I am also trying to figure out if the EGR Cooler has gone bad or something? Apparently the Oil Cooler can Clog Up and not let the EGR get enough Coolant and it all goes out the Exhaust Causing my White Smoke? Anyone care to agree?
Do you get a white puff on start up after it's been sitting for awhile like overnight?
An improperly seated/ lifted cup can allow the coolant to pass down lower Verticle edge of cup und run under between it and the head allowing it to spray into cumbustion chamber. This condition can happen and no cross contamination NOT READILY seen.
I had one I initially thought on visual examination had a cracked head. It would steam up the pushrod passage holes and leave a milky film on inside of valve cover above that cylinder.
I said I need to comeback with my coolant tester ( he called a said bring a scanner)to pressurize the system to see what's going on. No no I'm going fishing with it. Put it back together. We will do it next weekend. That's a really bad idea but ok.
I comeback next week with the tester and he has a new Ram 1500. Ok, I dig in and find some loose injector and number 2 you could actually see thru the injector tip hole, coolant squirting into cylinder. New cups, some head shaking as he installed those injectors in his Blackwater long block and swears he seated them and torqued them. Blackwater may have not seated the cup completly and it being not seated and glued in with no injector installed, his torque wrench clicked off at 120 and then combustion pressure and direct heat exposure melted the sealant, bolt loosens,,, cup lifts, coolant slips in OR his torque wrench was junk and heat and pressure lifted the cup. I don't know which happened but it did and he had to sell it after paying me to do the cups. He tried to return the new truck but you know what he found out.
I told him not to do anything till I went home and returned with more tools and Stant tester but no I'm going fishing and making an impulse purchase. Nice guy too was a member here and has sent me a customer. I hope he doesn't get hurt in that RAM1500.
