5" exhaust question

I know that I don't need a 5" system, but I think I want one . I also know that I want to keep my spare where it is. I have seen some trucks that dump the exhaust in front of the rear wheel. I assume the noise would be louder in the cab - which would be good when the windows are up, but might be obnoxious in the summer on a long trip. I have also seen one truck dump the exhaust right in front of the differential with a fancy chrome tip that must have been 8" in diameter. It was close to the rear end and the way it was done shouldn't heat it. I would appreciate any comments on the options here and what manufacturers will do.

Also, what does everyone think about the Duals? I would assume you could get better than 5" flow from 4" duals and the spare tire is happy. How do the duals sound compared to a single?

Mike.

no performance gain duals vs. single but duals will give you a more even sound, 5" will be louder, don't dump it in front of the rear wheel your rim will be black from the smoke

Thanks all for the input. I had heard once before that 5" compared to 4" lost MPG. This doesn't make sense to me. How can that happen? Sure the turbo could spool up a bit quicker (maybe). Beyond that I can see that EGT would go down. Appreciate any ideas on this before I make my decision. I certianly don't want to lose MPG at todays Diesel price.

Mike.

i leave my chip on 50hp most of the time. sometimes i turn it to 140hp to show off. i drive in town and on the highway. in town i do the quick take offs. on the highway i drive between 70 and 80. i average 16.5mpg with all of that. not sure what kind of mileage you are looking for. i have no complaints though. results may very do to different tires, gear ratios, mods, and what ever else. good luck on what ever you decide.
