The ATS housing is ported, see the difference between the intake port on the one on the ATS and the one on the left? (Not size, look at the edge of it) There is an opening around the edge. This is for sure the main difference. HOW it cures it I do not know, BUT what I DO KNOW it is a guaranteed 100% cure for it. The mechanics and science of it involves the "Map" of the turbo ect... kind of above my head, I ain't no "engineer",, just a back yard mechanic! LOL
That is called a "Ported housing" ,, and it is the only "Porting" I know of, you can't do it to a stock turbo, so I don't have a clue what they were talking about, and neither do they probably!

Bob Riley also offers a ported compressor housing for the Garrett BB turbo that is said to reduce surge.

It's real.

You can also try a WW as it cures surge 90%+ of the time.
Easy and cheap.

Thanks 444. I have a little more understanding of what it is. I know about the ATS Housing and WW. I was wondering if it really was "porting" in there? Theres not much you can do porting wise. The ported housing helps keep the compressor efficient. Maybe the correct term wold be..helps keep it in its map?? Balancing out drive pressures with speed?? Yes I am lost I just hope when you read this it sounds cool. Just trying to figure out how the ported housing helps the surge and what its really doing. Thanks for the replies.

The porting moves shifts the compressor map further from the surge line.
