well, after a day lone thrash to install the ITP reg return system, ATS housing, and the DIESELSITE boot kit i have a problem. this thing is too stinking loud! i am taking the truck on a vacation trip to the outer banks in a month, and there is no way my wife will ride in the truck now. and truthfully, i drove it 120 miles yesterday.... and it is really too loud in the truck. would a different air filter assembly quiet it down inside the cab? i really don't want to ditch the ATS housing, or change the WW either. any thoughts? You need a closed air box (AIS type) to keep the intake sounds down. An open air filter is what causing all your sounds to be louder in addition to the WW which forces the air at a much higher rate on lower RPM's.
You could also try and add some more firewall insulation in the cab.

Give the truck to me, I like the noise(and the smell), then you could go buy a Duracrap, those are quiet. J/k! Diesels are supposed to be loud.

The AFE Stage II comes with a partition that attempts to contain some of the noise. The Ford AIS should be quieter than either the Tymar or the AFE Stage II. If you thought you could find, fabricate, or otherwise end up with one of the aftermarket airboxes to use as a partition, it would help.
I think that the TAG helps to keep the noise down, but I don't know if it will fit in the ATS housing, or if it would make sense to use those two parts together.
I haven't heard the ATS housing personally, but it gets rave reviews for increasing the owner's level of satisfaction with the overall turbocharger experience. (it makes it louder) You may be in a tough spot when it comes to the housing, because I guarantee you'll like surge and stall less than you like your new noise level.
I have one last thought for you: Air in your fuel makes your engine louder. In the past, have you noticed your engine grows louder when you have less than 3/16 of a tank of fuel? I did. You might benefit from one or a combination of the several air removal/avoidance fuel system mods. They are:
1) bypassing the orange rubber check valve in the fuel pickup foot with a section of straight stainless tubing
2) eliminating the quick-disconnect fittings wherever they are in service sealing against suction rather than pressure, since they will eventually allow air to leak into the fuel stream.
3) extending the return in the tank, and eliminating the mixing valve
4) adding an Airdog
5) de-burring ID of fuel line tube ends
I've got rubber line wrapped with wire loom and connected with hose clamps from my fuel tank to the Airdog, where the fuel stream is pulled by vacuum. I continue to use the quick-disconnect fitting between the Airdog and OEM fuel pump, because the Airdog pumps fuel to the OEM pump at 15 psi pressure.

let me tell you guys.... it's like sitting in the dentist's chair for an hour with him drilling away on your teeth! there is ZERO surge, and the boost spools up really fast. it works great, just too loud for me.
Darth, my engine isn't loud... just the opposite. since i installed the regulated return, and the hpx crossover, it seems alot quieter. it's just the WHISTLE

Don't know if anyones tried it before, but if you could put dynomat on your firewall and interior that might help also.
Personally, I love the noise. Of course, that could also be why I'm partially deaf now.

i upgraded my stereo and put a sub behind the rear seat and that seemed to cut down on the engine noise. i have a AFE stage II and i get a little noise when i get on it, but at highway speeds it is surprisingly quite (even with the 4" straight exhaust). either switch to the AIS or an AFE.

I dont think the ATS housing makes it louder, it is the WW that does it. You have to get rid of that open element filter. Go to the Ford Severe duty one, it is completely encased like a stock housing but flows nicely. Just kind of pricey I think!
I am partial to that whistle, Love my truck sounding like a KW rolling onto the throttle!
Sweeeeeet ,,,,and it aint a HEMI!!!!
I do understand about the wife though. Mine does not ride in the truck that much,,
