Best Power Chip for 2001 7.3 turbo diesel

Hey, Looking for a good chip for my 2001 Ford 7.3L diesel. I dont need anything radical for racing. I use the truck mostly on highway driving and towing a 24 foot trailer with a total weight of about 6000 lbs when loaded. Looking to improve the gas milage a bit and a little more HP and torque, say 50 more horsepower. I have seen Bully Dog, Banks and Edge. Also, would 50HP need the EGT monitor? I saw the Banks six gun tuner that requires drilling the exhaust manifold for the EGT sensor. Is there a simple, yet reliable chip out there that would just plug in? Thanks for any replies. I dont wanna roast the engine either.

Re: Best Power Chip for 2001 7.3 turbo diesel

sv81,

For what you are describing I would call www.dp-tuner.com and order a pcm with the economy burn on it. No switches just more power and mpg. Some will say you need an EGT gauge but I have had great luck with just the pcm in stock trucks.

Merry Christmas

Before you get the programmer take very good Fuel mileage records. Say over 2,000 miles atleast (by hand). Then compare them to after and tell us what the results are!

Re: Best Power Chip for 2001 7.3 turbo diesel

Thanks guys. I will call DP Tuner, any links to the wildman? I always check mpg. doing about 75 pulling a 6000lb trailer (campmaster) on the highway I get average 10.5. Pulling a 6x12 loaded with two superbikes I get average 11.2 doing 80

Call www.DP-Tuner.com for the chip. I would also do a valve body or a sonnex/tricumulator springs at the minimum. The 01s have some serious tranny issues that you want to know about and hopefully protect against. Even with stock you need aftermarket gauges, and drilling for the pyro is no big deal. Pulling Vail Pass with only 6k and stock I could put pyro over the 1250* mark pretty easy. I did gauges before any mods just to get a base line. Jody should be able to help with what you want and answer your q's.

Re: Best Power Chip for 2001 7.3 turbo diesel

Ditto what Paul says. I haul a ton or so more than you, and find that the DP-tuner 60 hp tow setting works fine. Hauling 8k or so up a pass can push you close enough to the 1250 egt limit that you really should have the pyrometer installed. As Paul notes, the firmer shifts from a modified tranny throttle body [I have and like the FTVB, but I'm sure the BTS is great, too], which DP-tuner can 'tune' for, are a nice improvement when towing 3 or more tons. I also have, and like, the 80 econ setting on my DP-tuner chip. Its what I run when not towing, though I'm careful to have a light foot on the go-petal in that setting when the roads are wet. It may give a slight improvement in highway mileage, if you can resist the temptation to punch it ...

Re: Best Power Chip for 2001 7.3 turbo diesel

So after looking at the DP site, I can send them my PCM or get a DP PCM. What after market exhaust temp gauge is recomended? And with the DP chip or my supplied PCM, what if you have to return to stock settings?

No warranty issues, your's has expired, so there is really no need to return to stock. But, with a chip you can order the stock setting, with a programmer just return to stock.
Yes to first question, and any one of this sites sponsors can fix you up with a pyro. of your choice. Me I have the Autometer Lunar gauges and have had no issues for over 3 years.

Re: Best Power Chip for 2001 7.3 turbo diesel

If you want to be able to return to stock, you can spend a little more $$ and get the add-on 'flip' chip to plug into your pcm. That's what I and many others have done. I went with stock/60hp tow/80 hp econ, though I can't remember the last time I used stock. Many choices of pyrometer - search this forum for 'pyro' or pyrometer and you'll see many recommendations and purchase sources among the sponsors. I'm happy with the basic autometer mounted in the pillar, with the pyro installed via an n.p.t. tap into the exhaust manifold. IF you haven't already upgraded your exhaust, you'll want to at least install the BTM to reduce exhaust temps, important if you are upping the horses and either towing significant weight or have a heavy foot ...
