My tranny died today on my way to Fontana, it all started a month ago on a trip to Lake Lopez in CA towing my 37' 5er. The parking spaces are remote, too close together on a steep hill. And if that wasn't enough there are poles on the front of the space deviding them. Well after backing in and out of this fast food drive thru it seemed like, with my need instructions to turn a wrench brother-in-laws help. and my back seat driving wife telling me when to turn the wheel my transmission over heated and the smell of burnt tranny fluid hit me. It took the tranny about one hour to cool down and one day for me to stop cursing at everyone and everything. So I just left after it cooled off. But the damage was done. It all happened so fast. I was so busy looking around to avoid hitting anything (considering the help) that I never bothered looking at my trans temp gauge. I was however able to make it home like a dog with his tail between his legs and scared of any noise that came from under the truck. It was the quietest drive home I ever had, nobody said a word.
Well, today after my wife came home I told her the bad news about the truck and started to explain what my plan was on fixing it. Of course the fix was non other than a BTS which my wife knows nothing about. She can't tell a nut from a bolt but agreed with quality and perfomance wich is what BTS is all about. That is untill I told her the 4K plus price of one. That's where the title to this post comes in. Yeap, that's what she said. She may not know nuts from bolts but she sure knows dollars and cents working with money all her life. Justifing the money spent on the BTS took hours but as you all know everyone has a price so it took money on top of the 4K plus to get her to aprove, go figure.
So I called Patti at BTS to set up an appointment and schedule a pick up. I'll have it on a pallet by Monday. They are backed up untill the second week of September but its worth the wait.
I just thought I share this with you all. And sorry if I mislead anyone with the title.

Well that is awesome. However, I have some advice. I do not know what the surface you were backing on was like. If it was grass, gravel or dirt, you should have put it into 4x4 lo and let the tires slip when they bound up. You would not have overheated the tranny. My trailer weighs 18000# loaded. I never backup without putting it in 4x4 lo. You can just idle and it will still back up a small hill, LOL. Of course, I now have a BTS also. If the surface would not allow the wheels to slip, you need to do the mod that prevents the front axle from locking but allows you to get into 4x4 lo.

I thought of that but the surface was asphalt and the hill was ridiculously steep. I thought I was going to snap the king pin right off at one point. It was just a real bad experience.

One thing the financial managers understand is value. Print out some of the laudatory testimonials about BTS tranies going 100,000s miles without failure and compare the price between a HD Ford tranny and a BTS and they usually reach the obvious conclusion.

There are some web issues so I cannot directly link to the page. First go to The Mustang Shop and noodle around a bit. Then click this link! Let me know if this works.

FWIW I asked the local Ford store what a trans replacement would cost. A factory reman with TC, installed in vehicle, was quoted at ~$4k+. The point is the BTS cost is only a few hundred dollars more but it is more transmission.
Try telling your wife you need a trans just so you could get one. Now that's a sales job. No, I don't have one..........yet.

Wow, that's outstanding. I think I'll have her read the post instead!
Although it's a GO with the new BTS, it'll further justify it.

I also had a bit of trouble justifying the cost of one to my "Better half" compared to the 2700 from other places, including FORD. I explained the warranty, or lack of one with the BTS, There is no "Warranty" on paper, it is a handshake warranty which I would trust from Brian much more than ANY paper one from someone else. Brian has driven to a persons house, several hours each way to replace a transmission of his that "Broke" (They ARE mechanical, parts CAN break...) But it is so much less likely for his. He has fixed transmission that were past the two year point, for just the cost of upgraded parts, he runs his business with such enthusiasm, and honesty it is crazy. Sorry you will miss the "BTS experience" (Going there for the free install,,,,) and get to watch him build yours, while answering ANY questions you may have.
He takes the stock parts out, hands them to you, "Here look at this,, now look at this one,,,,mine. Throw the one in your left hand into that barrel there,,"
Over and over, while he takes the stock parts tosses them in the can, and puts in his new parts...
I have been there several times, once for my new BTS in my 99, then again to get it swapped, and "Went through" when it went into my 03 and had about 80k miles on the transmission then. He said the clutches looked like the ones on the shelf he would put into a "New" trans today!
And a couple other times to with a friends truck, (Towed down on my trailer)!
They are truly great people.

Here's a little story for her as well. Search for SixIron in these forums. He drives a van as an expediter and he now has nearly 500,000 miles on his. He had Brian service it at 200,000 miles and again at 400,000 miles. Total cost to him was about $600. That was for new better hard parts, replaced TC with newer better model, and new friction materials. That was total cost for two overhauls including labor.

The same for me, I spent the entire day with Brian and as he took the stock parts out I threw them into the trash. The man builds a tranny that will shift so smooth time after time. And as for the warranty on paper, all you get from Brian is a hand shake after the test drive and that is as good as money in the bank because he will stand behind his rebuild no matter what you do with it. I had a great time there at BTS.I drove 850 miles out to Lead Hill to get this done and do not regret it one bit.The best Mod you will ever do on your truck.

Oh yea, he will say I dare ya to break it. Also when I pulled out of his shop for my test run, Brian told me to stop, in the parking lot put the brake on and push the pedal down. I looked at him and said you sure he said yes. So I went ahead and done a burn out right there in the parking lot. These things are built to take a beating.
