you should give john woods a call. he is in holtville, ca. his trannies are to die for too. you should jump on socaps.com . i have his tranny and it rocks.
I was just sent a PM with the message above. I now hear John Woods makes as good a trany if not better than BTS. Now, that's something for me to seriously think about since he's located 240 miles from my house.
Does anyone of you have any input on this.
Thanks.

John woods has a good reputation, and surely more convenient, but better than a BTS, I don't think so. The BTS is the better value. Brian does not play pricing games with His tranny's, like others do. I am biased toward Brian's expertise, and experience. Myself, and many others have complete trust, and respect for His work, and His warranty is the best. One of the things, I have learned about Brian, it is not all about the money, it is about building the very best He can, and stand behind His work 200 per cent. Whatever you decide, at least you will be dealing with the two top guys in Ford tranny's.

I won't bash JW, he is regarded as one of the top builders for our trucks, And he is CLOSER by far for you.
But as mentioned above, Brian does NOT play any pricing games. With "Levels of builds". (Am I saying that is a BAD thing, not necessarily. Just glad to know I have what everyone else has in my transmission) With Brians transmission, you get what Dockboy ran, and what other HIGH HP trucks have run. Also what MADDOG ran behind his Cummins conversion which was a CC long bed Superduty, 4x4 and on large tires. He ran 10-11 second 1/4 miles. And was pushing something near 900 hp I THINK. I took mine back to him after almost three years. He installed some newer parts, hard parts like a new input shaft, and some clutch housing or similar part. Free of charge, he said, that is what the NEW ones get, so you should have it too,,,,

Well, after revewing my options it was JOHN WOODS AUTOMOTIVE who built my trany. All done! Just got back last nite from Holtville. It was quite an experience.
John really knows his way around a power stroke. His overall experience way exceeded my expectations. I'm very pleased with his services. It doesn't matter what your needs are John will have a set up that will best suit your needs. Real down to earth person who goes out of his way to help his customers. I left his shop with a smile on my face and a truck that felt totally different. I'm glad I went to John. If anyone is in
the market for a new trany close to Southern California he's the person to call. He worked till 9 at nite on Thursday to get me out on time.
He even updated the tunes on my chip and recalibrated my speedometer.
All that's been said about BTS is exactly what I experienced with JW.
The dicision was a no brainer for me due to convinience in location.
I think if both JW and BTS shops were to be located within a few miles from each other the thoughts of all current BTS customers in regards to JW's work would be as highly regarded.
BTW-John has had customers with Brians transmission come in for a rebuild.
All put together I believe they are both great trany builders.

But the BTS warranty is for as long as you own the trans. The only difference in and out of warranty makes is who pays for the shipping. In warranty, BTS pays. Out of warranty, you pay. Either way the fix is free. What is JW's warranty like?

What about dropping the trany. I'm not sure I want to pay someone to drop and install it all over again if something was to go wrong, or do it my self twice for that matter.

Any tranny will break in time. I don't care how good they are. BTS will stand behind it AFTER 2 yrs. What more can you ask?

No one will dispute that the bts warranty is second to none. However, if you live in Southern California, it seems more convenient to go to John Wood. Everyone who has a John Wood transmission seems to be extremely pleased with it.

ok in all fairness i know this site is the bts site. the different pricing plan is all fair if you look at it. i dont know what anyone knows about it but before anyone complains about it he has many rebuilds to pick from on base of the client. there are different tc's to pick from and so on. his waranty is 50,000 or 3yrs. he has his trannies in quite a bit of high horse power trucks and to top it off, i know that maddog has been bugging him to build him his trannies. and yes he takes care of his customers.

What would the difference be as far as where you live? Either should be capable of shipping it to you and you have someone install it. It isn't rocket science to install a trans. When I needed a trans, I could have gone either way since either would ship it and I have a local tech install it. I went with BTS because of the warranty.

There is more to a trany than just the warranty. The fact that you went to BTS for that alone would indicate you don't trust his work. So I wouldn't emphasize on just the warranty alone.

What do you suggest as a deciding factor? BTS users had about the same things to say as JW's users. Both seem not to care too much about what mods you put into the vehicle. Both seem to have decent customer service. It is a push in those departments. Distance matters little since both can ship and you can have it installed locally for your convenience. How to decide?
I decided on BTS because of the warranty. I know that either can and have made transmissions that broke on somebody. BTS has basically said he is confident enough with his product that he can stand behind it for as long as he is in bussiness. JW said he will stand behind it for 50K or 3 yrs, whichever comes first. Which one do you think has more confidence in his product?

Lots of people on this forum have raved about how much fun it was to actually go to bts and spend a day with the master mechanic watching him rebuild their transmission. They said that if you possibly can, take the truck to Brian rather than ship it to him because the experience of actually being there was so tremendously rewarding.
Now Southern Californians have the opportunity to have a similar experience without having to drive thousands of miles in a truck with a failing transmission that may or may not make it all of the way. John Wood offers the similar experience where one can spend the day with him in his shop watching the master mechanic rebuild the transmission. He manufactures custom parts on a lathe while you watch. You can discuss all kinds of options and decide with him what parts would be best for your custom built transmission.

I was at BTS when he installed my Big Oil system. I did peek into the trans room to watch part of it. I guess I was more interested to discuss future mods. What I am trying to say is that I found the discussion interesting but didn't get so much out of being there that it would make that much of a difference to me anyways. I went there for the Big Oil because I couldn't find anyone I could trust to install it.
I guess I did have a blast going there for a day and looking at what all is available for me, discussing the options, etc, etc. Oh, drooling at Tina at BTS wasn't that bad either. OTOH, it wasn't the make or break for me. IOW, if I the people were reversed and BTS offered only a 3 yr 50K while JW offered a lifetime warranty, I'd have had JW ship it to me. After all, I feel that if you aren't confident of your product, why should I be? In this case, both were confident of their product. Only thing was that BTS was more confident by saying it was the last trans that I would pay for. Also others have backed up his lifetime warranty claim.

Saying we go to BTS because of the warranty, because we think we will NEED the warranty, is ridiculous, It is nice to know he will stand behind it, 4 years from now, if it needs it, yes. They are mechanical pieces. Can a BTS break, heck yea it can, do they often, no. When they do is it nice to know 4 years later it won't cost you anywhere NEAR the cost of a new rebuild? (Probably only 4-500. on the outside,) For fluids and a bit of labor or shipping) if not totally free. I won't sit here and bash JW, no way. I have heard of many happy customers of his. He has rebuilt some BTS'? OK,, I guess that was silly of them to take one to him, when Brian would have stood behind it, but so be it.... to each their own. Brian has many transmissions out there, some have never heard of TDS I am sure,, maybe they didn't know after 5 yrs they would still get great service, maybe they bought it through one of his vendors out there, and THEY didn't give great service, guess you would have to hear the whole stories there,,,
