Check Engine Light

I'm a newbie to Diesels but just picked up the truck in my sig a couple of weeks ago. I've noticed when I have my bullydog 6 pack up on 100hp, when I get on it, the check engine light will come on. Its only on for a few seconds, usually until I let off the pedal.

My question is if it doesn't stay on, should I be worried? Could it have something to do with the Garrett turbo? I'm not 100% sure which one it is.

Thoughts or ideas?

Among other things over boost or low high pressure (injector) oil pressure are high on the list.

Your either over boosting, or the ICP is out of desired range. (The one that goes away after just a few minutes of driving is the Over boost light) Usually the ICP one just sets a code, with no light IIRC.

So keep my foot out of the throttle when I have the 6 turned all the way up? Sounds easy enough...

I presume, you have a boost guage. If the boost exceeds about 20 psi, the map sensor trips the light, and defuels the motor. A boost relief valve should solve the problem.

First, get some gauges.

Second ( I know i'm gona get flamed for this) get a code scanner that can read our trucks (extended OBDII). When you get a code, it will be held in the computer for several start/run cycles. This will tell you exactly what's going on. With that information, you'll have what you need to determine if it is something that can be ignored.

The other thing nice about the scan tool is all codes do not generate a SES light. Pulling codes once a week or so is a good start to how your truck is running.

I personally like AutoEngunity and pull codes once every two weeks (light or not) and have found some interesting things about my truck even with no ses light.

Happy Thanksgiving

I do have Boost, EGT, Trans temp and even fuel pressure gauges. I will look into checking the codes and see what I can find. I just bought this truck a couple of weeks ago and still trying to figure out what I've got.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I believe the over boost sets at 25lbs, not 20. So watch them, see when the light coincides with the boost reading.
If you plan on working on your own truck often, AE is a great investment. I was one of the first 25 buyers of it of a group buy on here. I got a good deal, and learn every time I plug it in... The ONLY thing I wish it offered was a better explanation of the "Tests" it runs. Some of which are not as self explanatory as the "Buzz test" or CCT. The KOER, KOEO, I know how to RUN them, but it would be great if during these tests you know what is being tested when,, just to be a little more educational.

Jim,
Does SLAPS meet monthly? I know a guy in your club that is in my Jeep club. I'd like to hook up with some local folks and the club.
