Put in the last 3 hours pouring through the "Best Transmission" thread.
Sort of like going to an all day event at the old movie house, lots of action, strong words, challanges to duels, comedy, political talk, babe talk, even pink underwear.
A couple of questions: BTS and my dead ATS have the same color purple on the converters. Anyone know why?
Anyone know who makes ATS FiveStar converters?
Noted some lockup talk in the Best thread: What speed does the BTS lockup? What speed does it drop out of lockup when pulling a heavy trailer up long hills?
If anyone wants to know why no one was praising ATS in the over 300 posts in the "Best Transmission" thread, read my thread "Snake Bit and Gun Shy with my ATS".

This F450 will be replaced with a heavier truck, maybe a Freightliner or a Peterbilt around 25,000 GVW. AND with a big manual transmission.

Depends on the tune. With a stock tune it locks and unlocks at 37 MPH, same as any other 4R100 tranny/torque converter combo. If you want to change the lock/unlock speed, then you need a tune with different parameters, or else you need a seperate torque converter controller.
I have the SP-Diesel torque converter controller. Sean calls it the Speed Sense Torque converter controller (SSTCC). You can "program" it to lock/unlock at any speed you choose, within reason. But you'll probably figure out that Ford's 37 MPH is pretty good and hard to improve on for most conditions. Mine is combined with the SP-Diesel exhaust brake, but Sean will sell you just the SSTCC if you don't want the exhaust brake. SP Diesel SSTCC
Note that Sean didn't do a good job writing the fine print for the SSTCC. A lot of it is for the exhaust brake (EBTC), not for the SSTCC without the exhaust brake.

Tons of companies have purple converters. My old one was an aftermarket purple one too.... till it blew up.
Don't waste your time on overpriced overrated converters. Contact Adrian (user: powerstrokeconverters) Home Page and get a real HD converter at really good price. Ask about your dieselstop special price. He'll hook you up. Straight-shooter honest guy.
No probs with the triple clutch unit I bought off him this summer.... and I don't drive like no crusty old man.... WOT often.
The purple is usually a heat activated paint typically used for Torque converters. It will turn brown when it overheats so they know the history of it. Actually - it will turn different shades depending on the temperature and stay that way so when you try to get it replaced under warranty, they will know it was fried - and possibly other reasons.
