Upgrades and Aftermarket - 99 & up 7.3L EngineUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1999-Up Super Duty or Excursion with 7.3L Power Stroke diesel engine. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 7.3L Power Stroke engine.
I had the choice of a free Magnaflow Exhast System. I figured the bigger the better, so I got the 5" Turbo back kit. The kit is going on 01 Superduty with 75K miles on it. The truck is stock now but I plan on getting a aftermarket Intake system and a DP Tuner in the next 6 months. A buddy of mine is telling me is is going to hurt the truck (will not let turbo spool up right?). Will this hurt my truck? What do yall think?
some would say 4" with a 3 1/2" down pipe is optimal unless gunnin for 500 hp. no backpressure = loss of low end torque. someone that knows more will chime in to confirm or dispute this.

Tell your buddy to learn how a turbo'd engine works....then install the 5".
BTW the downpipe will only be a 4" anyway.

The Magnaflow exhaust has the straight-through muffler, it goes straight through the center of the muffler with no restrictions compared to the stock muffler.
I have the 3 1/2" DP into the 4" SS Magnaflow on my 2000 7.3L Van, and I wrapped the entire exhaust with Thermo-Tec 2" Header Tape Wrap and it made the inside of the van super quiet, like over 50% improvement. It does not raise or hurt my EGT's, if anything it helps them the experts say. All NASCAR And most race cars have the pipes wrapped is a safe thing to do.
My Aux. Aft Fuel Tank is 1-2" away from the pipe rounding over the back axle, and the Thermo-Tec Wrap blocks all the heat. I don't have to worry about the fuel boiling or a possible fire from the hot pipes.
The Thermo-Tec Wrap is one of the best mods I did to my van.
When I had my van built, I drop-shipped Dynamat to the conversion company and they installed the soundproofing on the entire interior of the van, the floor, side-walls etc. It's quiet like a Rolls Royce. I also installed Q-Pads on the bottom of the van, on the underside exposed sheet metal and it made a big improvement. The 12" x 12" squares stick on the metal and you simply heat them with a heat gun and they stick on for good.
I also installed a new blanket of insulation inside the doghouse engine cover, and it really helped the soundproofing. The top of the hood, inside is also covered with Q-Pads, then the roof silver Dynamat Blanket. So much noise comes up from the hood in front of the windshield. If you soundproof the inside of the hood, you will love the results.
My point is, install the 5" system with the 3 1/2 or 4" DP, and enjoy your Truck. If the sound is too loud for you consider some soundproofing materials.
With a DP Tuner Chip and new Amsoil AaE Air Filters, you will have much more power and the back pressure will not be an issue. A Chip or Tuner is like Magic, like a whole new engine. These engines are "De-Tuned" as it is.
The Diesels are one of the best things to happen to light duty trucks and vans.
The new BMW 3 Series has a Twin Turbo Diesel Engine with very impressive numbers.
Check the BMW Site to watch some Flash Movies about the new Engines.
I can't wait for the new Quad Turbo Ford Trucks And Vans.
My van is my Sportsman vehicle, fishing, hunting and like a home away from home.
Yea its over kill but someday when you install a bigger turbo or twin turbo, propane , water/methanol injection etc.etc. etc. you will be all set in the exhaust department. By the way the turbo creates all the back pressure the engine needs.

The backpressure (less power) idea with these diesels is a myth. You could have a 6" pipe coming off the turbo and going up through the hood. Spool up would be faster with large vs small exhaust. EGTs lower. It's a no brainer.
I went from 3" downpipe DP-tuned to 4" turbo-back system. If anything got more torque, not less.

Man I'd love to ask for a couple pictures of your wrapped exhaust job... sometime not tomorrow :>)
that way I could see what the sticky sound proofing on the belly looks like too?

Well i just got done putting the 5" Magnaflow kit on the truck. I had stock exhaust with a straight pipe(no muffler). The kit is actually 4" pipe to about the transfer case skid plate then jumps to 5" though the muffler and to a 6" tip. The kit to my surprise is quieter than the straight pipe that was on the truck, but it looks dang good!
