Re: DIY Tymar Air filter system

I do not have a link to a list, but here is a pic of what I did on both my 99 and 2000 Ex.
DIY Tymar

46637 filter

I buy the 3.5" Schedule 40 rigid PVC (cheap), it has an outside Dia of 4". Then all you need is some hose clamps. My 99 needed a 45 elbow but the 2000 just needed a straight union piece. I also remove all the OEM filter housing. So I don't lose the screws I took out, I put them back in the original locations.

Re: DIY Tymar Air filter system

Many suggest using metal, not plastic for this.

I bought a 4" long section of 4" diameter exhaust pipe from a local truck shop and used that on my 2000 Excursion PSD. Worked great.

Re: DIY Tymar Air filter system

Yep, go to a "BIG RIG" place, Peterbuilt, KW, ect... get a 4" 45* elbow, and the constant torque clamps. Map out what you need by laying the filter in, and figuring out where your coming from, or what your going to use.

Re: DIY Tymar Air filter system

I just used a piece of 4" exhaust pipe that I had left over from putting my exhaust system in. I just used worm clamps I found that with the engine heat the rubber from the filter and the intake tube gets stuck on the exhaust pipe very well.

Re: DIY Tymar Air filter system

I have that same PVC 45 elbow. I wonder if the 3.5" inside diameter is very restrictive?

Re: DIY Tymar Air filter system

Update....I installed my "DIY Tymar air intake". I used a piece of 4" exaust pipe I got from a big truck parts shop. I didnt need an elbow and I didnt omit the valve (the piece of straight pipe in the picture).Seems to work good. Thx to all here @ TDS...Im learning alot about my PSD!!

I didn't have to buy any pvc it worked perfect just really tight on the filter side... I'll try a link

DIY intake

I have an o3 F350, 6speed. Warranty is up in Feb! I use Rotella synthetic
My biggest complaint with the factory air intake is the 7K miles I get on the filter. Sucking air off the highway is a crock only some idiot in Ford could have devised. Well, the low mileage also..
I have looked at your photos and can only wonder about one thing. The filter sits under the hood in the engine room. What is being done to improve on the fresh air intake? I have thughts, but hate to re-invent the wheel.
Pulling a loaded bobcat trailer or sod grossing about 20K pounds, I still get 13-14 mpg. Empty about 15-16. It likes # 2 diesel a lot better than winter mix.
I am about to drop the muffler, the last thing I want to do is spend a bunch of $$ on a chip. Power is not a problem. My goal is to improve mileage. Open to suggestions.
John

The "HOT AIR" under the hood is not an issue. I believe it was SmokeyWren, (maybe someone else as highly respected on here, can't remember) who did some tests on under hood temps, sitting they were slightly higher, however while moving, much less. ALSO our intakes go through the turbo, (Air gets super heated, while compressed anyway.) then through the CAC, (Charge air cooler) and cooled back down. It is NOT a 1:1 ratio of temp in and temp out, (40* hotter air in, is something like only 3* warmer going into the heads.)
There was a link with all the math from some very hard working people on here! (explaining all the science behind compressed air...)

Get yourself a 6637 NAPA filter, 5 inches of 4" diameter exhaust pipe (from any exhaust shop or parts house, straight for late models and 45 degree for early models) and a couple of clamps and your done. Stay with the steel. Plastic is thicker and restricts the flow of air more than steel. Also do Guzzle's mod if you want the filter minder on it. Welcome to guzzle's 6637 Filter Restriction Sensor Web Page

I found a 45*- 4" exhaust piece at a muffler shop for $25 and rigged mine like this.

I the forums could use a DIY sticky (kinda have one now but its incomplete)at the top that way threads like this are easily addressed in one thread...they seem to work well on other forums I belong too.

Just my $0.02,
