EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

OK guys, I am interested in adding an exhaust brake and I have found 3 different brands that do essentially the same thing. SPDiesel, Powerstroker, and Scorpion. It looks like they have quite the pissing match going on between one another. Which one should I go with? I would rather not cut wires. thanks for your help.

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

You left out the BD version of the so-called "electronic" exhaust brake.

If I were buying one today, I'd probably choose either the SP-Diesel with the torque-converter lockup option, or the BD BrakeLoc, also with the torque converter lockup included.

Here's the link to the BD:
http://www.dieselperformance.com/for...oc&tt=ford

Note that the one for the automagic tranny costs $395, but it includes the torque converter lockup stuff. The one for the stick shifters is half that price because it doesn't have to worry about locking up the torque converter.

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

I'd be interested in something like this also. Does it add more wear and tear on the engine? Does it make a lot of noise? (I hope it does!) Also, how effective are these if you don't do a whole lot of towing?

Sorry if this is hijacking the thread...I don't think it is though.

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

The SP diesel one is the best on the market, with the best control and the best set up. It is all plug and play no cutting, no hacking. Had mine for two years with no issues.

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

what about the banks brake? They seem to make it sound like it is so much better than the others...not true?

what about the banks brake?

[/ QUOTE ]

There are two basic designs for an exhaust brake for our PSDs. The design we're discussing in this thread is the "cheap" kind of "electronic" exhaust brake that uses electronics to manipulate the exhaust back pressure valve (EBPV). When closed, the EBPV causes some engine braking effect. The plain exhaust brake costs around $200, and the torque converter lockup capability costs another $200, for a total of around $400.

The "expensive" kind of exhaust brake adds a butterfly valve to the exhaust system, right after the turbo, and doesn't use the EBPV. Those are made by Banks, BD, U.S.Gear, PacBrake and others. They cost over $1,000.

So yeah, the Banks is a good 'un, but it costs more than twice as much as the kind we're discussing.

BD makes both the cheaper BrakeLoc and the high-priced BD Exhaust Brake. So you can compare the two designs from the same manufacturer on the BD website at www.dieselperformance.com

Note that the BrakeLoc for '99-'03 7.3Ls costs $400, and includes the torque converter lockup controls. The BD Brake costs $899, plus another $405 for the TowLock torque converter lockup control. So about $1,300 to go with the best BD makes. I haven't priced the Banks Brake, but I'll bet if you get one for an automatic tranny that includes with torque converter lockup control, it will cost you at least $1,300.

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

I love that I have a 6-speed. I gotta say, I really was hoping to get the "brap brap brap" sound that 18 wheelers make. I freaking love that.

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

with a 6speed you actually can control the performance a lot better since you have more direct control over the revs'...And yes you save some money. As for competing solutions, I would respectfully challenge any potential buyer to find as many conveniences and features for the money...Be it less or be it more money...

Re: EBPV exhaust brake, which one?

I have SPDiesel's too! Works great! I love towing with it. Truck and trailer coming down a hill it's nice to let the engine do the work not the brakes. My wife drives the rig on the long trips and she enjoys having the exhaust brake. She feels the truck is under control. I got pulled over by some local cop one day cause I had it set in a "NO Exhaust braking zone" I told him I didn't have a exhaust brake. He said I was lying and that he heard me exhaust braking with the truck. He called another cop and they looked under the hood for 30 minutes trying to find it. Of course no external device on the exhaust so they had to let me go!
