What is the consensus on the oil bypass systems? It seems a little mixed right now. Are the new systems top notch or are there still startup oil pressure problems? Also, is Evanīs Waterless Coolant worth the larger investment (with bypass filter of course) or would a switch to extended life gold be more practical? I was planning oil and coolant bypass systems at 100k along with a 203 t-stat. Who makes the best new water pump?
Sorry for the long post.

I built my own coolant filter, oil bypass, and transmission filter , just have to get the time to install them . After some debate on filters Donaldson or Fleetguard i opted to do the Donaldson filters exclusivly ( thanks to everyone for thier opinions in my other post). I also use the DIY "6637" BAF as my air intake, love to hear that turbo SING and also did the CCV Mod . I' ve also done the DELO ELC coolant conversion. My next thing will be converting to Synthetic oil probably Rotella T synthetic or Delo 400 synthetic sometimes next month when my shop gets finished , then Flushing the trans and filling with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF , flushing the Brake lines and power steering before this summer.

i first started running rotella t almost 40k miles ago, and it is THE best oil i have ever put in any of my vehicles. i have gotten almost 6k miles out of an oil change with little to no visible breakdown. i try to change my oil every 3k miles, but there are occaisions when i'm not able to during 28 days of 12 hour shifts, etc, and rotella is THE best synthetic that i have ever found.

Add a Mag Tech cover to the rear end. My diff got so hot with the original ford cover it burnt the paint off. Replaced with a Mag Tech and syn oil & the new cover is larger so holds more fluid. You can also add a temp sensor to the mag tech. I put a 3-way switch in dash and can switch between trans temp and rear diff. Since change never see # higher than 180 on rear diff.
I did a home made tymar intake but recently replaced with the Ford AIS...don't know why but I gained 1 mgp since the change. Maybe due to cold air from front vs hot air from engine on my original mod? Just turned 78K miles and nothing else changed except ULSD and winter fuel so I'm thinking this AIS is a good thing or truck is finally breaking in

I have been happy with the Oilguard bypass filtration system as it has allowed me to extend my drain interval and use synthetic oil year round. I am planning to put a pressure valve in the bypass so the filter only operates when the oil pressure is greater than 20 psi. That would be while going down the road but not while idling at a light.
I have used Evans coolant for nearly 100K miles. In that time there have been substantial improvements with the low silicate or non-silicate extended life coolants. For ease of maintenance and cost, I would stick with a recommended ELC, like Chevron Delo ELC (AKA Texaco ELC or CAT ELC) or Fleetrite ELC (AKA Rotella ELC). Personally, I would not use the Motorcraft gold as it is not as good as the above coolants. Evans is not bad but try and find some on the road. The 0 psi feature sounds great until you discover that the pump bearing was designed to be wet and under pressure. Finally, the viscosity of PG coolants like Evans is higher and so without changing your pump you actually diminish your cooling compared with ELC. I have a 203š t-stat from Bob Riley but it now seems to open prematurely and I will need to put a new one in. The best mod is his billet t-stat housing. I would get an Airtex water pump from Norther Auto Supply for less than $80 with all gaskets and new bolts. They are the OEM manufacturer.

The transmission flush mentioned in the faq section is sure a fine one and certainly an asset to maintaining our transmission longevity.
As a diesel newbie a couple of years ago, I was reluctant to try to change my fluid using this procedure, fearing I did not have the skills needed.
But I mustered up my courage, gave it a try, using Mobil 1 Synthetic transmission fluid, and it worked out beautifully. In fact, that was about 50K miles ago so it is probably getting time to do it again soon.

You posted that about a year ago, and lots of water under the bridge since then.
Mark Kovalsky has revised, edited and updated his 4R100 ATF change procedures. The old version is still in the FAQ section off the home page, but the new version is in the FAQ subforum under "7.3L Engine and Drivetrain FAQ". One big change is that Ford replaced MERCON ATF with MERCON V ATF a few years ago, so the current proper ATF is now MERCON V. Changing ATF: 7.3L PowerStroke Engine and 4R100 Automatic Transmission.

ANSWERS TO MANY
COMMON EVANS NPG & NPG+ QUESTIONS
Question: Do I need a Zero or low pressure radiator cap with NPG+ ?
Answer: NO. You may use your standard radiator pressure cap. In fact, we recommend a 7lb cap to keep NPG+ from absorbing water from the atmosphere. Some users found they could smell coolant, again a 7lb cap eliminated the issue. NPG+ will still cool your system with industry leading efficiency. Of course if you'd like to run a low pressure or even zero pressure system, you will need to purchase a low pressure cap or modify your existing cap. Please consult our tech pages or instruction guide (or call us) before modifying your existing cap!
