I want to build my own regulated return fuel system. I already have a Mallory fuel pressure regulator and deleted my stock fuel filter years ago. What type fittings go into the "other" end of the heads? With identical heads, I see the stock factory fuel supply ports. I see other fittings but as I recall, they have o-rings.
My heads are off right now being rebuilt due to an accidental overheating/headgasket issue. I'd like to put it back together with the new plumbing but don't want to have to buy a whole regulated return kit.

There are a couple of ways of going about it. You can feed the heads...
1) from the back side (some guys like that because the fuel runs "uphill" and will help (the say) to push out any trapped air)
2) from the front side
3) from the front of one and the back of the other (kind of like the factory set up)
You also need to decide what kind of fuel lines and connectors that you want to use...they don't need to be much bigger than stock unless you're not going say over 500 HP.
You mention that you eliminated your stock filter sometime before....so, then how is the fuel getting to the heads now?
In answer to your question about what kind of fittings go into the other end of the heads....well both ends of the head take the same type of fittings...they're all 1/8" NPT fittings. What you put into them will depend on the fuel lines/hoses and fittings that you choose plus where and how you decide to direct the flow in and out of the heads. For example, the back driver's side will be tight because its next to the turbo so I found it easiest to put in a short straight fitting and then connect a 90 degree fitting to that since I didn't have room to thread and line up perfectly a 90 degree elbow into the head that close to the turbo. The front driver's side will more than likely will be a straight fitting since it will probably be heading back up towards the top of the motor regardless of whether its used as a delivery or an exit port for the head. The front passenger could use a 45 degree fitting (but then again with no factory fuel filter there to cause clearance issues you might just go with a straight fitting there as well. The rear passenger I went with a straight fitting out of the head and then my JIC fitting was a 90 degree to keep things away from the turbo exhaust and snug to the motor. I went with front feeding the heads and running the rear sides into my regulator and then from the regulator to the factory fuel return line. BTW, I used all JIC fittings and had my hoses made to length with the endings on them that I wanted at a reputable hydraulic hose fitting shop.
Like I said, you first have some choices to make regarding how you want set it all up and then what materials you want to use. Mock it all up on paper then when you get your heads back get you final measurements made and go for it.
I never thought of a diesel-rated fuel pressure regulator. I'll look at the number and dig deeper. I'm not at my shop to look at the FPR and my heads are still at the machine shop but I'll check it all out.
I want to go with JIC fittings as well. I run heated WVO and biodiesel so I'll need to go with Teflon lined hoses.
Thanks again for your reply. I'll print it out and digest it more when I'm back at the shop reinstalling the heads.

AN 6 to the heads ...make sure your Reg is rated for diesel..I'd feed the front and return from the rear. Do a bowl delete while your in there.

What about making my own AN-6 hoses? I see the parts in Jeg's and Summit Racing. Plus, I've seen clips on how to do it on the car/truck shows. Can a moderately competent home mechanic tackle making my own hoses? I want to use the teflon lined, stainless steel exterior hoses. Not so much for looks but for running biodiesel.
By the way, I did the fuel bowl delete years ago as part of my heated veg oil fuel system.

Thats a option..I've built a few one off custom systems using AN fittings and SS lines.

Any good hydraulics line shop around your area should be able to make them up for you pretty reasonably and to the exact lengths and with the end fittings that you want.
