Hi-Idle Mod

A buddy of mine has a very similar truck to my own, minus the mods, his is stock except for the DIY Tymar, and he wants to wire in a Hi-Idle switch. I have a 6 position chip with the Hi-Idle mode built in. My brother wired a switch into his 6.0 to get Hi-idle and I had assumed we could do the same with the 7.3. all he had to do was find the wires under the dash and hook up a switch. I searched the forums and found the mod including a couple potentiometers and some fairly intricate wiring. Is this (and the stealerships factory Hi-idle box) our only option. I figured it would be simpler.

I too have the same question but on a 01 EX. I know I should have had my DP tuner set up with Hi-Idle but I didn't

Then pull the chip and mail it back to DP-Tuner. They can add any additional tunes you want, at a cost of $45 to $75 per tune.

Or if you have the SCT programmer from DP-Tuner, then you don't want to add a high-idle tune on that. It takes a coupla minutes to change tunes on the programmer, and that's a lot of effort just get get a higher idle RPM.

I'm an old man with a bad case of CRS, but I seem to remember that if your truck has either a manual tranny or an automagic with the PTO option, then it's fairly simple to wire up a high idle RPM switch. But very few of the pickups have hand shaker trannies, and almost none of the automagics have the PTO option, so for most of us the Ford Auxiliary PCM (a.k.a., auxiliary idle controller or AIC) is the obvious choice. I've had mine for over 9 years and would not want to be without it.

The DIY article is off the home page - contents - feature articles - and you'll see:
1999-2004 $10/$15 AIC

No. The VIN won't tell you that, unless you use the VIN to obtain a "build sheet" from your Ford dealer's OASIS computer system.

The 4R100 with the PTO provision has a removeable plate on the side of the tranny case. The ones without the PTO provision don't have that plate. But that little plate was about a $300 option, so very few pickups that were not ordered to be converted into tow trucks or some other reason to want to install a $3,500 PTO and hydraulic system will have the PTO provision.

The PTO provision is not a PTO. It's just a provision that allows you to install a PTO. But the PTO provision includes the wiring to install the PTO and elevate the idle RPM to run the PTO.

[quote=SmokeyWren;1812737]Then pull the chip and mail it back to DP-Tuner. They can add any additional tunes you want, at a cost of $45 to $75 per tune.

I might just do that and get a 60hp high altitude also, I just didn't want to be stuck in stock mode for that few weeks the tuner was out getting redone

If you call DP-Tuner and talk sweet to Dianne, she'll tell you how to get the chip done to your specs and you'll be without the chip for only three days - certainly less than a week. It requires paying a little more for overnight delivery both ways, but hey, it's worth it if you love your DP-Tuner.

Or if you paid the big bucks for the F-6 chip, then you don't even have to mail it back. You can download the new tunes from the internet.

I don't think the F-6 chip and I would get along too well. I'd mess something up NOT too computer savvy if you know what I mean, I'm a bloody knuckles kind of guy. Manual labor that is.
