I've been reading every d66 thread I can find trying to decide on which turbo to buy. Many people say the d66 outflows the GTP38R, TN BB and the H2E. How is that possible with a 20mm smaller wheel and compressor housing?

You are looking at two different things. A wheel has two sides, an inlet(inducer) side and an outlet(exducer) side.

yep i always assumed the d66 had a 66 mm wheel
but the important wheel is more like 88 mm I believe.
bean can tell you for sure .
here is the thing about e99's to upgrade to either bb unit , you need to change all the
up pipes, pedistal, spyder etc...runs 600~1000 depending on the pedistal, then add the turbo.
this is why the d66 is so cost effective for the e99's it just bolts on.
so really your looking at either a 1300 turbo or a 2200+ h2e , or bb package
or buntings new mounted turbo deal., also closer to 3k.
the draw back of the d66 is maybe, it won't last as long , and it is good up to stage 2 injectors...
at least that was what I got out of the info everytime i read up on it.

your talking about the same thing!! the 88mm specs the exducer and the 66mm number is the inducer of the same wheel. the d66 is the same compressor wheel as the gtp38r has and the housing is machined to fit the larger wheel. kind of expensive if you ask me when the wheel is only 100 dollars and balancing should be less than 100 and a rebuild for the parts you can do yourself is less than 100. lets see 300 dollars for a rebuilt balanced "d66" alot cheaper than the 11-1200 beans is selling!
for that price you could pull every trick in the book on YOUR OWN turbo.

you can order it through just about any rebuilder and any turbo shop can install it for you. i don't want to see people time after time paying higher prices than they need to and a 400% gouging is sad!!!
Thanks for clearing up the wheel sizes. I would love to build my own, but that housing will not fit my turbo. I would need it machined. Still how would the D66 with the same wheel as the GTP38R out flow the 38R? I guess I just don't know the specs for each turbo. Do you know the turbo model for the early '99? For those with BB experience, does it really spool up much faster? If the BB is so durable and the performance so much better why don't the OEM's ie. Cat, Cummins, International and on and on us BB turbos? Thanks again. At the same time has anyone built there own injectors?
