Installated exhaust/TS chip today
Found a good deal on a 4" MBRP aluminized exhaust a couple of weeks ago and got around to installing it today. I was just getting things setup and to my good fortune my son dropped by the house. 2 hours later the old exhaust was off, the new one on and the truck running again. Removal of the old exhaust is pretty easy if you're not afraid to cut the downpipe or the over axle pipe. Installation was a piece of cake. After completing the exhaust I loaded the stock program back from my old SC 1705 I pulled the neg cables off the batteries and proceeded to remove the PCM to install the TS chip. This was also a pretty easy task. Probably about an hour or so to complete the chip and switch installation. I had installed my DIY intake last Sunday while I had a few hours of decent weather. Took the truck out for a drive and all I can say is WOW. The TS chip in 50, 75, 100 and 140 settings delivers so much more power than the old SC programmer. One thing I did notice is that the TS smokes a LOT more than the SC ever did, even in performance mode. I had been running the 1705 in the truck almost since the day I bought it used in 2003. Up until this week all I had done to the truck were gauges, the 1705 and a K&N stock replacement. I's probably going to be a few months before I hook my fifth wheel up again, but I'll be able to get a good baseline on empty mileage with the new chip. It's going to be tough to keep my foot out of it with this chip. Definitely a lot of fun, especially that 140 program. The thing spools up so fast it's hard to shift the damn thing fast enough.
I've searched both here and PSN looking for comments about the off the shelf TS chip. I'm curious as to other experiences especially with regards to smoke. When running stock or either tow-safe or performance on the 1705 I could get the truck to smoke, but only when I really stomped on it. With the TS, I don't have to work hard at all to get it to smoke. The smoke is okay occasionally, but in my mind smoke is wasted fuel. I guess maybe I'm just going to have to re-learn how to drive with this chip in order to maximize my fuel mileage.
